THE MEANING, SPIRIT AND GOALS
1. THE MEANING
The "ALMA" is a movement, community and institute of consecrated life that, motivated by a great desire to bring to life the Good News of Christ for the poor, dedicate them selves with full awareness to take part in the evangelization of the poor, the disabled and abandoned in and by the concrete situation today.
The "ALMA" in following Christ as their model and motivated by the Holy Spirit, aims to guide and develop the capability of dedication and of making sacrifices of the lay men, the people of God, in implanting the Good News into the society of all walks of life today. All members with their different calling, both those who make vows in the evangelical councils, and those who are singles or have families, with personalities and back-grounds that are various, integrate in a strong and active unity of missionary spirituality.
The heart of the movement of the ALMA is a core group who dedicate their whole live to Christ in the Secular Institute ALMA and make themselves completely available to God and His Kingdom. They share the responsibilities of the maintenance of the spirit and the continuity of the whole movement.
2. THE
SPIRIT
The spirit of the ALMA resources from a deep comprehension of the 'GOSPEL' that suggests the plan of Divine Salvation with Christ and the People of God as the center.
The spirit of the ALMA is the belief and feeling of the ALMA that the divine salvation plan in Christ through the Church, as the salt of the earth and the light of the world, will renew the society today and be a blessing for the poor and those who suffer.
To all who take part in the ALMA, the comprehension of this salvation plan, and their calling in it, become the motivation to consecrate their lives to Christ by following the model of Mary who as a virgin and mother has lived in the world to carry out full dedication to Her Son and His work.
Their Noble Consecration has the character of continuous effort to seek, to guide and to nurture with infinite love those who are poor, disabled and who suffer in their needs and problems and renew them in the power of Christ in the Holy Spirit.
The ideal of the ALMA is to bring the Gospel to life and make it effective for the poor today, following the example of the spirit of Vincentius de Paul, who particularly with Christ and Mother Mary are the models and protectors of all members of the ALMA.
Maintained by their intensive participation in the Ecclesiastical life, and rooted in the Sacrifice of the Eucharist, they all experience fully the spirit of the ALMA with joy and smile in dedication and sacrifice.
3. THE
AIMS
The ALMA intends to:
1. Follow Christ evangelizing the poor.
2. Work to bring the Gospel to life, particularly for the most disabled and abandoned in a mission of faith and love.
3. Form the people of God, especially the lay men in communicating the Gospel and bring them to fuller participation in bringing the Gospel to life for the poor.
And, with the above
intention:
a. To implant an awareness into the people of their dependence upon God and the Care of His Love.
b. To present God's Kingdom of love to all society, especially to the community of the poor, the disabled and the needy.
c. To be living witnesses of the Good News for those people.
d. To accompany the encounter of Christ with His chosen people.
e. To look after the development of the whole community in the Divine Love.
THE BASIC LINES OF THE ALMA APOSTOLATE
1. THE
PRESENCE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY
The members of the ALMA carry out their apostolate in the community. They live and work in an environment which is the same as the environment of the poor and disabled, and experience it in their own bodies and souls.
They don't come just for a while into the environment of their fellow human beings who are poor and disabled and then return to their own environment, but they live in the same house with the disabled so that they become one family and transform themselves into the community where or to whom they are sent.
2. TAKING PART IN THE COMMUNITY
They take part in the life of the community in every thing that occurs, in discussions, groups, associations, social activities, art and cultural events, but especially in their mission to work.
3. MAKING CONTACT WITH THE COMMUNITY
Home visitations and personal contacts strengthen the relationship with the community in extensive Evangelization and CBR (Community Based Rehabilitation). They maintain relationships and make contact systematically, planning as extensively as possible with all the people, based on their occupation and tasks, especially those who are poor, needy, and disabled.
4. GIVING WITNESS, RADIATING THE LOVE OF GOD AND SALVATION BY GOD
It is not proselytism which is the aim of the ALMA, but kerygma (the proclamation of His Kingdom), open house, radiate Christ with beauty and goodness in religious service, prayer, by presenting and transforming the Gospel through words and deeds.
5.
GUIDANCE
They guide the development of faith and spiritual life that has been started under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Guidance needs to be provided continuously with an open spirit, with soft feeling, with careful maintenance. This basis is a starting point for them to guide the encounter of Christ with poor, disabled and abandoned people so that His grace of salvation will extend in accordance with the full measure of Christ.
6.THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COMMUNITY SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY
They form small groups, both formally and informally, developing a sense of responsibility in the community through small groups. To observe, to consider and act through discussion on the Gospel, social matters and reality.
7. THE IMPLEMENTATION OF COMMUNITY EFFORTS
As the result of an integrated sense of social needs (the needs of the poor in the community, both physically and spiritually,) and through discussion with the community based on the teaching of Christ, automatically a desire to work together and to carry out common efforts will grow.
In the implementation full of responsibility of their efforts and works, their unity in God develops and their integration in love is visible.
8. SOCIAL EDUCATION AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE COMMUNITY'S STANDARD OF LIVING
They take part actively in the social education, especially education for those who are poor, disabled and abandoned, both in cooperation with official agencies and based on their own initiatives, but always in close relation with the whole community.
They form leaders or cadres to stand up socially with their own responsibility.
They educate the community so that gradually in the community or in the environment in which they work, a social and responsible community structure will develop.
9. THE
SERVICE OF DEDICATED LOVE
They become productive servants, developing and inspiring different forms of devoted love, like looking after ill people, helping the disabled and the poor in any fields by individual contact. They change social care into the service of dedicated love.
10 VOCATION OF SUBMISSION OF SELF AND TOTAL DEDICATION OF SELF TO THE PEOPLE OF GOD, THAT IS TO THE "CIVITAS DEI" (THE WORLD OF GOD)
They dedicate themselves totally to the people of God as their life task, both dedicating themselves fully to their unity with Christ, and also to the world and the people of God. They find their vocation in consecrating themselves in the loving service to the suffering world so that they will develop it in accordance with God's Ideal and Will. They present the Kingdom of God in the local culture and in the concrete situations of the community.

Among these three branches only the first and second branch are Secular Institutes in accordance to the Church Constitution from 1947, "Provida Mater", and the Codex Iuris Canonici, while the third branch depends in harmony from them.
The point of convergence of each branch of the Lay Missionaries Action is the monthly recollection in which the spiritual life is deepened, apostolic experiences exchanged and working plans are constructed together.
These three branches are united in:
The aims and the ways of apostolate.
Spiritual life and spiritual guidance.
Work to develop the community from within in general and in the projects for the poor and disabled that need cooperation in particular.
All the things that are related to the cooperation between the three branches of the ALMA are arranged by coordination between these three branches .
THE EVANGELICAL COUNSELS AS A STATE OF LIFE
Voluntarily and in unity in respond to the same vocation, the members of the
ALMA are responsible that the profession of the evangelical counsels and their
vocation among the poor prospers. This deep spirit of unity and the religious
task of the ALMA bring about varied relationships, i. e. relationship
inter-members, relationship with all who take part in the ALMA, relationship
with the superiors, relationship with the poor and disabled.
The specific feature that gives color to this relationship is loving cooperation in responsibility, in open attitude and in readiness to serve fellow members, carried out according to the evangelical counsels. The male and female members of the ALMA dedicated themselves totally to Christ and the service of the poor through Jesus own counsels, that are the evangelical counsels: Purity, Poverty and Obedience.
1. Purity
and celibate life.
The members of the ALMA, both men and women welcome the celibate life in the world as total dedication to Christ. For her/him this dedication is an act of love as a free personal choice, a total dedication to apostolate in the world and from in the world for the Kingdom of God. Their lives and living situations are arranged so that dedication to God in a whole personal love will be able to flourish as fully as possible and be comprehended as thoroughly as possible.
2. Poverty and the use of materials
Living within the ALMA where all possessions are dedicated to the Lord's Kingdom, every member should pay attention to the following matters:
a. To foster respect towards things and their usage responsibly.
b. To contribute to the ALMA everything that is received included remuneration, in accordance with the rules and usage that are determined by the statutes and the Superior of the ALMA.
c. To develop responsibility for the maintenance of common possessions, to help getting the things that are needed for the apostolate among the poor, and avoid excessive and luxurious possessions not fitted with a life among the poor and disabled.
d. To make attempts in his/her personal life to free him/herself from anxieties and attachments and accept with joy everything that has to do with the life situation of the poor people.
3. Obedience
/ loyalty
The ALMA as an religious institute needs a leader as a manifestation of authority. That authority represents Christ to whom the ALMA dedicates itself totally. This authority is in the hands of the Superior of the ALMA to whom the members of the ALMA show and promise their obedience. In implementing his/her duty, the Superior is closely assisted by the Council of the ALMA that consists of 3 persons who are chosen from and by the ALMA's members.
It's the special duty of the Superior to
Maintain the unity and union on every level that bring about community life and togetherness that realizes the Kingdom of God.
To assign duties and tasks, in a synthesis of the view of a Superior and the charismas and potentialities that exist in the members. Therefore each member is free to express his/her opinion and to present some possibilities to the Superior.
Those who are in authority are open for this, acknowledge the competency and situation in the members so that there is a dialogue between the member and the Superior of the ALMA on how to comprehend the general life guidelines that are written in this statute in his/her own life, either individually or in the community. For this purpose every member can contact the Superior, but should also be ready to accept the decision made by the Superior. To develop evangelical observance and loyalty at least once a year a personal contact between a member and the Superior in charge should be made.
Living and working together as Christians in religious maturity is the desire of every member. Whenever possible this is carried out in open deliberation and after an interview, then the leader makes his/her decision and this is accepted by free dedication by the concerned member. This dedication is based on the belief that the authority holder in making an important decision on concrete matters may be considered as voicing the will of God, and also based on the desire of the member to bring into reality the fullness of Christ as perfectly as possible.

O R G A N I Z A T I O N
1. Candidacy
When someone feels that he/she has the vocation to live a lifelong bond in the ALMA, he/she can contact one of the ALMA's members who will show the way to him/her to be accepted as an official candidate. This acceptance is done by the superior or someone who is designated by him/her in which case a recommendation is asked to the Council of the ALMA and to several the ALMA's members.
As requirements, of the candidate or aspirant is demanded:
A statement of her/his persistent desire to dedicate her/himself totally to Christ and His Church in the union with God.
Positive talent for spiritual life and religious maturity.
Spiritual and physical health by which he/she has to hand in a doctor's letter stating her/his health.
Healthy mind
Adequate education and talent to be guided towards useful skills for apostolate.
2. The Formation Period
Formation consists of:
Deep spiritual life development which is oriented towards a dedication to responsibility and a pure devotion to Christ in the ALMA.
Freeing oneself little by little from attachments that hinder self dedication to Christ, either personal attachment or attachment to the environment.
Development of spirit of deliberation, mutual cooperation/ sharing work and cooperation.
Formation of character and development of talent and skills for apostolate.
Testing readiness and capability for obedience, purity, poverty, cooperation and making sacrifice that exist in the life as a member of the ALMA.
All these takes a long time in comprehending spiritual life and developing and forming skills
Generally it is considered necessary to provide formation for six to nine years before a member of the ALMA is allowed to dedicate her/himself for life.
The preparatory period is divided in 1 (one) year postulate and 2 (two) years candidacy. After this period the candidate is received officially as member and enters a formation period of 6 (six) years.
During this time he/she is guided personally in his/her development by a special guide/ instructor who is designated for this purpose. A sufficiently long time of the formation period is carried out at one of the ALMA education center where tranquility and deepening of spiritual life, formation of asceticism consciously and formation of apostolic life that is useful for apostolate are emphasized.
The authority who is in charge or his/her deputy, after a consultation with the Council of the ALMA, can state him/herself to persistently use every opportunity provided by the ALMA for further formation.
3. Permanent
bond/commitment
When an agreement is achieved between a candidate and his/her superior that it is time for a permanent commitment to God, and after the superior conducting an investigation and deliberation as necessary, a decision is taken.
If the superior and the Council of the ALMA make a decision that a member of the ALMA is accepted for permanent dedication, this member commits/adheres her/himself for life to the ALMA. This commitment is written and signed by the concerned member him/herself and then signed by the superior of the ALMA or his/her deputy and at least two witnesses. The original document is kept in the file of the ALMA while the superior keeps a copy. Whoever gets the membership of the ALMA with this total dedication is accepted by the ALMA for all his/her life.
His/her welfare and also concerning diseases and survival become the responsibility of the ALMA. At the time of permanent dedication a member of the ALMA has to arrange and decide in written form what has to be done with his/her possessions. And since the permanent dedication he/she lives in poverty so that all his/her possessions are further handed over to the ALMA.
4. Ending
membership
Although a member of the ALMA dedicates her/himself and is accepted for life, it could happen that due to serious causes, her/his bond/tie with the ALMA has to be put to an end. The initiative is taken by the concerned member or by the Superior of the ALMA. If a member finds that he/she has to end his/her bond, then after careful thinking and sufficient prayers and discussion with his/her Spiritual Guide, he/she will tell it in written form to the superior of the ALMA and states the causes. The superior then conducts an investigation. During the investigation, the member has to keep his/her secret completely and continues to do his/her duties as usual.
On the other hand, serious reasons may come to the surface, that forced the superior of the ALMA to put an end to the membership of a member of the ALMA. Counted as these strong reasons are
Strong disobedience.
Unserious dedication to the spirit of the ALMA that caused real damage to the ALMA
Serious violation of the commitment to purity, poverty and obedience.
ADMINISTRATION
Each branch of the ALMA is independent with its own administration. The Highest
Board of Administration of the Sisters (or brothers) of the ALMA is the
Presidium of the ALMA (general Assembly every three years) The Presidium of the
ALMA is a board at this meeting that consists of the Superior general of the
ALMA and the delegation of groups in the general assembly. The Presidium is
represented in all external affairs by the Superior General of the ALMA.
All votes in the ALMA are taken in accordance with the statement in the Canon 161-178 of the Church Canonical books.
The Superior general in her duties is assisted by the Council of the ALMA that is chosen by the members of the general assembly with the agreement of the Superior general.
The Council of every branch of the ALMA consists of three members who are elected firstly because they already have experience as leaders of a group, experience in charge of apostolic tasks and experience in the life of teamwork.
The members of the Council of the ALMA are elected for a period of three years. If there is a reason for a member to resign from her function before the end of the office, other member fill her position after a deliberation and agreement with the Superior general.
After the three years peroid/office, each member may be reelected but not more than two official periods.
Duties of the superior general which are implemented in deliberation with the
Council of the ALMA:
To appoint a group's superior and a superior who has to form prospective members.
To rule about the acceptance of prospective members and members.
To investigate whether prospective member can be considered fit to be accepted definitely in the ALMA. All these with a deliberation with those who are concerned.
To make a plan for spiritual life and further formation of every member in line with the spirit of the ALMA.
To establish a center for prayer of the ALMA in silence and pastoral formation for further maintenance of spiritual life.
To maintain the development of spirit and prayer.
To arrange the appointment of members in certain fields with certain positions and duties.
To manage the economic and material interests of the ALMA and its members; to control the financesl and possessions of the ALMA.
To represent the ALMA in dealings with Ecclesiastical management, the government and organizations.
At least three times a year the Council of the ALMA gets together, has a conference to conduct a discussion in depth, deliberation and further planning can be held in an ad hoc meeting or by correspondence.
Matters regarding conscience which are already communicated to the highest administration confidentially may not be discussed in the conference.
F I N A N C E
1. The finances
of the members
If a member of the ALMA has some personal possessions or receives a legal inheritance, she/he still has the right over the possessions until a definite bond/commitment after the three to six years formation period ends. The use of the output of this personal possession by the members is managed by the superior of the ALMA.
At the start of formation it must be determined what is brought by a member as a personal possession. If possible the candidate her/him self should pay her/ himself for his/her training or help obtaining the costs. If this is impossible then the member might be assigned to a service contract.
Before a member states a definitive dedication she/he takes a decision about her/his possession in a will or by other valid way. After the definitive decision of total dedication and perpetual vow, the member doesn't have right over her/his personal possessions anymore.
2. The finances
of the ALMA
In every country where the ALMA works, the ALMA has to have a juridical status so that the ALMA would be able to conduct legal matters in that country.
The finances of the ALMA for daily uses and for the implementation of duties as the ALMA in a country are obtained from:
- The income of members of the ALMA.
- The income of the ALMA as the ALMA
- Grants, subsidy, legal presents, gifts and legacies.
- Other legal contributions.
Every branch manages and is responsible for its own finances.
Every year the general superior gives her accountability report to the Counsel of the ALMA on the financial state, and every 3 years to the general Assembly. in the way and at the time by the general Assembly. These accounts should show the evidences and provide the accountability on the possessions of the ALMA and their usage.
CONCLUSION
What has not been arranged in these statutes will be decided in according with
the concrete situation so as to make the spirit of love for the poor and the
manifestation of the Church in and from within the world appear in it.
