Episode Forty

Summer's Room

"Summer?" Matt repeated. "What is this?"

"I should have put it in a dumpster or something a couple blocks away," Summer said, trying to laugh.

"Summer!"

"Yes, okay? I'm pregnant! Jamie and I... and now I'm pregnant," she said in a rush, beginning to pace the room. "And I have no idea what I'm going to do, except Jamie says he's not going to just abandon me and the baby. But I don't know what I'm going to do now..." she trialed off, stopping her pacing and wrapping her arms around her stomach.

Matt walked over and pulled his sister into his arms, holding onto her as she cried.

Med Center

Daniel Sr. rushed into the ER, followed by Aaron. "Where is my grandson?" Daniel demanded.

"Mr. Grant," Julian said as he walked over. "Jamie's in a trauma room getting checked out."

"What the hell happened? I was told he was attacked! What happened to the police guard he was suppose to have?"

"The guard was the man we were worried about," Julian explained.

Aaron gasped, drawing the attention of both his grandfather and the cop. "You mean... you had the guy who raped Jamie guarding him?!"

"What?" Daniel said, shocked. "The guy who... what?"

Aaron swallowed, not having meant to blurt that out. "I mean..."

Julian nodded. "Yeah. Officer Powers is the rapist we've been looking for. Jame's okay, it didn't happen again."

"Again?" Daniel asked.

"Jamie was raped last fall. No one knew until late Febuary, when Mike find out," Julian explained.

"He told Summer before Mike found out," Aaron corrected.

"When did you find out?" Julian asked.

"The day after Jamie found out he was a Grant. I was giving him a ride back to his apartment and he just... He blurted it out," Aaron said quietly.

"You should have told me!" Daniel said.

"I didn't want anyone to know," Jamie said from the doorway. "Aaron was just trying to... you know, respect my privacy."

"Jamie..." Daniel began.

"Don't. I just want to get out of here. I want to go curl up in bed and sleep for a couple days, but I can't because school starts in a couple of days and I haven't even bothered to go and get my schedule or anything..."

"I can pick yours up tomorrow when I go to get mine," Aaron offered.

"Yeah, I'd appreciate it..." Jamie started, then trailed off and sighed. He looked up at Julian. "I know I gotta give a statement or something. Can it wait until tomorrow? I can't... I can't deal with it tonight."

Julian nodded. "Yeah, it can wait. You should just go home and get some sleep."

"Come on, we'll take you home right now," Daniel said, reaching out to his grandson and being pleasantly surprised when Jamie let him put an arm around his shoulders.

Harris House

Rebecca had taken her kids out for a late dinner, and was shocked when they returned home to find the street swarming with police. "What is going on?!" she demanded.

"Officer Roberts should be back here soon, you'll have to ask him, ma'am," a young oficer said, not recognizing Rebecca.

"This is my house, and I want answers now!" Rebecca said.

The young officer swallowed as he finally recognized her. "Officer Harris! Um... That rapist we've been after was arrested tonight. He tried to go after Jamie Bowen again..."

"Again?" Jenny asked.

"I really shouldn't be saying anything at all..." the officer said.

"Are you saying Jamie had been... by this man before?" Rebecca asked.

"At some party he went to last year before school started."

Jenny turned on David and smacked him, hard.

"Jenny!" Rebecca admonished.

"He admitted to me that he put something in Jamie's soda at that party!" Jenny replied, furious with her brother. "Is Jamie okay?" she asked the young officer.

"He seemed fine when he left with Officer Roberts and Dr. Reed," the man replied. "A little dazed, but considering what happened... or almost happened... I guess it's understandable."

Summer's Room

Summer and Matt sat on the floor at the end of Summer's bed, neither saying a word. Finally Matt spoke. "Jamie does know, right? It sounded like he does, but..."

"I told him earlier," Summer confirmed. "He's the one that insisted I wasn't alone in this. He said we'll find a way to deal with it together."

"At least he's got access to plenty of money now, he can take care of both you and the baby."

Summer nodded. "Yeah, I guess so. Of course his mother got disowned for marrying Jamie's dad, it's possible Mr. Grant will disown Jamie for getting me pregnant."

"He didn't disown Aaron for being bi," Matt said.

"Nowadays that's only a minor scandal. But teen parenthood is still a big deal," Summer said. "I just don't know what we're going to do about this baby."

"What baby?" Jancie asked from the doorway. "Though I think I allready know the answer to that."

"Mom!" Summer said, jumping up. "I.. I'm...."

"How could you be so irresponsible!" Janice continued.

"I..." Summer started again. "I'm sorry..."

"You're sorry?" Jancie said, then stopped. "No, you don't need to be, we're going to handle this. I'll make the call and make an appointment for you right now..."

"I've allready seen a doctor and had it confirmed..."

"This appointment isn't to confirm it, Summer Anne Brady. This is to end it."

"What?" Summer asked.

"You heard me, tomorrow we're going to take care of this problem..."

"It's not a problem, mother! It's my baby!"

"It won't be for long!"

"I am not having an abortion!"

"As long as you plan on living in this house, you are!"

"Then maybe I won't live here anymore!" Silence followed Summer's outburst, then Summer tried to reason with her. "Mom, please, I won't kill my baby. I can't."

"Then I want you out of this house tonight," Janice said, turning and walking out of the room.

Summer was still for a minute, not believing what had just happened. "Oh my god," she finally said.

"She didn't mean that," Matt said, heading for the door. "I'll go talk to her, I'm sure she didn't mean that!"

Summer watched her brother leave, then turned and grabbed her backpack, throwing things into. Despite her brother's belief, she knew Janice did mean it. And she wasn't going to wait around to be thrown out.

Brady Kitchen

"Mom, she made a mistake, you can't just..." Matt tried to argue.

"Do you have any idea how humuliating this could be for me?" Janice asked. "I am a succesful, well known perosn in this town, and she's going to embarrass me!"

"Is that why we left New York and left her there, mom?" Matt asked, his own anger flaring. "Because you were worried she'd embarrass you? Guess what, she never would have gotten into toruble with Pete if you had brought her with us!"

"Don't you talk back to me, Matthew Brady!"

"Don't kick my little sister out for making a mistake!" Matt countered. "Damn it, mom! Don't you get that she's scared? Don't you get that she needs you?!"

"If she had remembered what happened in New York she wouldn't be in this situation!"

"What are you talking about?"

"This isn't the first time your sister's been pregnant, Matthew. At least Pete had the sense to convince her to get rid of the problem!"

Outside Brady House

Summer threw her backpack into the passenger seat as she climbed into the car. She started the engine and pulled out quickly, not sure where she was going, but knowing Matt wouldn't change their mother's mind, at least not tonight, and knowing she couldn't go to the Grant Mansion, Jamie probably hadn't told them yet about the baby, and she didn't want him being kicked out, too. Finally, she decided to go to the Bowen Cabin, remembering the spare key hidden over the door that Jamie had shown her. She could stay the night there, and call Jamie in the morning to figure out what to do.

Pete's Car

Pete smiled as he saw Summer get into her car alone and take off, and he pulled his car out into the street to follow her. His smile faltered slightly when he saw that she was heading for the lake, thinking that maybe she was going to meet friends out there. But it grew once more when he saw her pull up to a small cabin with no other vehicles in sight.

"Perfect," her murmured as he saw her fumble for the spare key, and enter alone. "How sweet of you, Summer. A private spot for us to reunite," he said as lightening arched across the sky again.
