Episode Forty Two
Brady House
"Summer was pregnant before?" Matt asked, shocked.
"Yes, Pete managed to convince her that they were too young to have a baby and she got rid of it. But that Bowen boy is too stupid to realize that!"
"How long have you known about this?" Matt asked. "When did you find out she'd had an abortion?"
"You father called me and told me right after it happened. He thought I should know," Janice said, sitting down heavily. "Damn it how can she be stupid as to do this again."
"And how can you be so heartless as to care more about your reputation than your daughter?" Matt countered.
Virginia's
Summer saw the sign and almost gave up until she saw someone in the parking lot, opening a car door. As the inside light came on, she recognized Laurence. "Help!" she screamed, stumbling as Pete grabbed her arm.
Laurence turned and saw Summer struggling with Pete. He droped the things in his arms as he ran towards them. "Hey! Let her go!" he yelled.
Pete looked up and shoved Summer away. "You little tramp! I'll get you back, Summer!" he yelled at her before taking off into the darkness.
Laurence reached Summer and dropped to the ground beside her. "Summer? Are you okay?" he asked the somewhat dazed girl.
Summer nodded slightly. "I... I need Jamie. Please, I need Jamie."
"I'll take you to him," Laurence said, helping her up. "Come on, I'll take you to Jamie."
HFPD
"Anyone asks questions, you tell them 'No comment'," Malcolm told his officers. "Say nothing about Powers, nothing about Jamie. You do, you're risking your job. Everyone got that?" Amid the nods of understanding, Malcolm waved everyone away as a form of dismissal. He picked up some papers from a desk just as Rebecca came hurrying in.
"What the hell happened at my house tonight?"
"We arrested the serial rapist we've been after," Malcolm said.
"Hank Powers?" Rebecca asked skeptically. "I find that hard to believe!"
"Tell that to Jamie. He almost got raped again tonight by the man I told him was there for his protection."
"You put my kids at risk, Malcolm."
"Never as much as I put Jamie in," Malcolm retorted.
"How is Jamie?" Rebecca asked, actually seeming to be genuinely concerned.
"He'll be fine physically. But he was almost raped for a second time, Rebecca, and the only people he has to comfort him are the Grants. He's not going to be all right for a long time."
Rebecca sighed. "And Powers?"
"Paralyzed," Julian said as he walked in, leaving Sarah leaning against the door frame. "Probably for life."
"He deserves worse," Sarah said firmly. "After what he did."
Julian ignored his wife's comment. "Malcolm, I told Jamie he could come give his statement tomorrow morning. He was completely out of it, so I let Daniel Grant Sr. take him home."
Malcolm nodded. "Good. I wish I didn't have to make him talk about it at all."
"I came with Jules because it might be a good idea for either me or the counselor Jamie's been seeing to be here tomorrow," Sarah said. "If he gets upset he may need someone who knows what they're doing to calm him down."
"You know the counselor?" Malcolm asked.
"Never met him, but his rep is good. And I know after Jamie started seeing him last January he started acting a little more like himself," Sarah said.
"You have his contact info?"
Sarah nodded and held out a card. "It's all there," she said.
"Thanks, I'll call him in the morning."
Grant Mansion
Daniel frowned as he heard the doorbell chime. "Who on Earth would come here at this time of night?" he complained.
"Some inconsiderate person," Miranda replied.
Daniel stood and walked out to the foyer. Standing there, soaked from the rain, were Laurence and Summer. "What's going on?" he asked them.
Summer looked up, and Daniel saw the tears in her eyes. "I need to talk to Jamie."
"What's wrong?" Daniel asked, walking over to the girl.
"I just need to talk to Jamie, please, I need to talk to him," Su,mer repeated.
"Summer?" Jamie said from the top of the stairs. When he saw the look on her face, he ran down the stairs, taking them 3 at a time. Summer met him at the bottom and grabbed him, crying. Jamie wrapped his arms around her. "Shhh," he murmured, "It's okay, Sums. It's okay. Whatever's wrong, it's gonna be okay." He looked up at his uncle. "What happened?"
"Some guy was chasing her. He took off when he saw me coming," Laurence replied, frowning at the bruises on Jamie's face.
"Who was chasing you?" Jamie aked Summer.
"Pete. He was going to make me go back to New York with him," Summer said, her head buried against Jamie's shoulder. "I had to jump out of the car and I didn't think I was going to get away..."
Jamie closed his eyes and tightened his grip on her. "It's okay now. You're safe."
"We'll call your mother to get you," Daniel offered.
Summer pulled back and looked at Daniel, shaking her head."You can't," she told him.
"Why can't he?" Jamie asked.
"My mom knows, Jamie. She found out and she kicked me out of the house... I don't know what to do..." Summer explained. "I wasn't going to come here because I didn't think you'd told anyone yet..."
"It's okay, baby," Jamie said, brushing her hair off her face. "It's okay."
"What is this about?" Laurence asked.
Jamie looked at the adults in the foyer, then sighed. "Summer's pregnant. With my baby."
There was pure silence for a long moment, finally interrupted by Miranda's outraged shriek. "It's bad enough you bring all this other bad publicity to this family but now this? Do you have any idea..."
"Shut up!" Daniel ordered his wife. He waited for her to fully quiet, then turned back to Jamie and Summer. "I can't say I'm happy about this."
Jamie hung his head. "I'm sorry," he said quietly.
Daniel sighed. "Don't apologize," he told his grandson. "It's done. All we can do for now is find some dry clothes for Miss Brayd to change into and get her settled in a room for the night," he continued.
"You're..." Jamie started, stunned. "You're not just gonna yell and kick me out?"
"Are you crazy?" Daniel asked. "First off, I made that mistake with your mother, I won't make it with you. Second, that girl is pregnant with my great-grandchild. I won't allow them to have no place to go. Now, will you take her to one of the guest rooms for the night? We'll discuss things in the morning."
"Daniel!" Miranda said.
"In the morning, Miranda," Daniel repeated firmly.
Harris House
When Rebecca returned home, she found a near war going on between her children. "What are you two yelling about?" she asked.
"Him!" Jenny replied. "God, he doesn't even feel the least bit of guilt for what he did!"
"I didn't do anything!" David replied. "It's not my fault he got himself..."
"Don't you dare say it like it's Jamie's fault! You're the one who drugged him!" Jenny interrupted. "God, David! Can't you take responsibility for ONE thing?!"
"That is enough!" Rebecca said.
Jenny fully turned her attention to her mom. "Do you know? Is Jamie okay?"
"He'll be fine," Rebecca said with a sigh. "They didn't even keep him at the hospital."
"Good," Jenny said. "I'm going to my room," she said before turning and runnning upstairs.
Rebecca sighed. "I can't believe this."
"How can she take his side over mine?" David asked.
Rebecca looked at her son. "David, don't you have even the tiniest bit of remorse?"
"Why should I? Jamie was the one who was stupid enough to go outside alone."
Rebecca sighed and walked into the kitchen, not wanting to deal with any of this at the moment.
Med Center
Hank slowly opened his eyes and stared up at the tiled ceiling. He tried to turn his head, but found it was immobilized. He tried to move his hands, but they were stopped short by the handcuffs holding him down. He let out a grunt as he realized his legs weren't moving at all. A nurse entered his field of vision, but instead of comforting words she simply glared at him as she checked his vitals.
"Why can't I move my legs?" Hank managed to croak out.
"You're paralyzed, Mr. Powers," Drew said coldly as he entered the room. "In other words you got what you deserved."
"How dare you!"
"You don't have the right to be outraged, powers. Not after what you did."
