The Sororities
There
are 7 sororities and 7 fraternities at Brookline University. Their sororities
can have a maximum of 60 members. Here's a run down on the sororities,
and when Joy, Libby and Angel get into one, you'll be able to visit
their sorority website. (Note: Don't click here if you
don't want to know which sorority they got into...read the Rush! stories
to find out!) Click on the name of the sorority to view their house.
Theta Alpha - The 'grande dame' of sororities on campus, Theta Alpha was the first sorority on the Brookline University campus. The Alpha's used to be very exclusive but in the 1999-2000 year, the members are trying to get more involved on campus, and break down their image of seeming off limits. They have seen dwindling numbers over the years and are trying to pledge more girls than in the past. They are seen as exclusive, and somewhat snobby by some students, but are working hard to change their image. Their philanthropy is HIV/AIDS. They are paired with the Alpha Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
Delta Gamma Rho - The latest trend. In the past, the DG Rho's were known as a boring sorority, one that wasn't involved much in any aspect of the school. In the past few years the members have worked hard presenting a new attitude for the DG Rho's. They often host parties, do charity work (as all the sororities do) that involves fun, and they've become involved in intramurual sports. Delta Gamma Rho is becoming one of the more known sororities on campus. It's philanthropy is a children's collaborative drop in center. It's becoming more popular with all kinds of students. They are paired with the Kappa Delta Sigma's.
Pi Beta Gamma - This sorority has an image between the Theta Alpha and Chi Omega Beta houses. It was a party house for years, until recently when past presidents who were legacies tried to give it a better image. It's hard to get into, and some people think the house is somewhat snooty compared to the others. The Bet's still have a reputation for giving good parties, and boast one of the largest on campus events every winter. Their philanthropy is United Cerebral Palsy. They are paired with the Zeta Alpha Psi fraternity.
Chi Omega Beta - The self proclaimed party house. ChiOBeta has along tradition of fun behind it. This sorority has been active in sports, pep rallys, fundraising, and is known for some of it's wild theme parties. It's one of the more popular sororities on campus, and one of the largest. They are always visible at football games, and rally's on campus, and most people during their years at Brookline University will go to at least one ChiOBeta party, probably their legendary Halloween parties. Their philanthropy is National Breast Cancer Foundation. They are paired with the Delta Sigma Tau fraternity.
Phi Delta Pi - The sorority of activists. This house is often raising money for a new cause. Their set philanthropy is Save The Harbor Save The Bay locally, and Greenpeace internationally. The sorority is seen as the one to join if you don't want to be part of a typical Greek experience. The sorority attracts a lot of unique students and prides itself on being different from everyone else on campus, which has made them popular with girls that wouldn't usually think of joining a sorority. They are paired with the Psi Kappa Sigma fraternity.
Gamma Chi - Gamma Chi is the most racially diverse house on campus. Many students that belong to science majors favor this house, and it has a view of being suited to scholars and serious students. They don't host many campus parties, but do have events regularly to benefit their philanthropy which is Ronald McDonald House. This sorority is a favorite of the administration, who never fail to use it and it's members to show the good sororities can do. They are paired with the Omega Zeta Tau fraternity.
Iota Sigma Phi - The newest sorority on campus, it's first year in rush is in the 1999-2000 school year. They don't have an image yet, as they are very new. The sorority has recently rented a house that is a block off campus. They started as a local sorority and just got national status by being absorbed by a national, previously they were Eta Phi local sorority. People are curious about them because they are very new and don't have a set image. There are only 15 members at the start of the Fall 1999 school year and they are hoping to increase their numbers substantially for rush. Their philanthropy is Special Olympics. They are now paired with Sigma Epsilon Chi.
The Fraternities
Alpha
Kappa Epsilon - The
Alpha Kaps are seen as a preppy house, and have dropped off in popularity
over the past few years. Instead of being most popular, they are now somewhere
in the middle, and are trying to regain ground by planning more interesting
events, and not ones that exclude the regular student body. Their
philanthropy is Parkinson's Disease.
They are paired with the Theta Alpha Sorority.
Kappa Delta Sigma - One of the most popular fraternities on campus, KDS, or the Kappa's as they're called, also is one of the bigger ones, with at least 100 members. The brothers are seen as down to earth, and are also known as campus pranksters, a group that always is into having a good time. They also have a good academic record, and do well for their philanthropy, Boston Rescue Mission and Massachusetts Coalition For the Homeless. They are paired with Delta Gamma Rho sorority.
Zeta Alpha Psi - Zeta is known as a house that a lot of the varsity athletes join, especially the football players. They are known as a house that has great beer gardens and throws amazing parties, like Arabian Nights, and the Disneyworld Party. They raise the most money on campus for their philanthropy, The American Heart Association. They are paired with Pi Beta Gamma.
Delta Sigma Tau - The Delta Sig's are one of the popular houses on campus along with Zeta and Kappa. They are seen as a bit of a party house, and are seen at almost every school function. The members are diverse, from athletes, to academics. Their philanthropy is Habitat for Humanity. They are paired with Chi Omega Beta.
Psi Kappa Sigma - Psi Kap is an up and coming house which gets more and more members each year. Their philanthropy is the Boston Alzheimer's Center. They are paired with Phi Delta Pi.
Omega Zeta Tau - The smallest house on campus, Omega has only 24 members. They don't have a lot of campus events because they're short on funds and have trouble fundraising because the other fraternities do so well at it. Their philanthropy is The Adult Literacy Resource Association. They are paired with Gamma Chi.
Sigma Epsilon Chi - The Sig Ep's finally get to be paired with a single sorority for campus events now that Iota Sigma Phi is on campus. The Sig Ep's are in the middle of popularity, and it's hoped that they'll help their sister organization with gaining new members. Their philanthropy is The Kidney Transplant/Dialysis Association.
