Algebra Skills

To fully understand all the concepts of points, lines, and planes there are some algebra skills that you must comprehend first.  First you need to understand and recognize points and lines.  There are some equations that you learn in algebra that will help you with geometry.  You need to understand number lines, segments, and endpoints.  There are certain things you can and can not assume about diagrams.

Can Assume

  • Straight lines and angles

  • Collinearity of points

  • Betweenness of points

  • Relative positions of points

Can Not Assume

  • Right angles

  • Congruent segments

  • Congruent angles

  • Relative sizes of segments and angles

When proving a problem, you may have to use theorems and/or postulates.  It would be good to review theorems, postulates, and definitions that you know.  It is important that you review definitions such as:  bisects, trisects, midpoints, congruent.  It may also be beneficial to review angles because they might appear in proofs.
