Backbone Mountain
Elevation: 3360 feet
Hiking Distance: 1 mile
Completion Date: 9/15/01
Backbone Mountain is in extreme Western Maryland, right on the West Virginia border. A good way to climb Backbone Mountain is through a three-highpoint trip consisting of Spruce Knob(WV), which connects to Backbone Mountain by winding through Route 33, taking route 32 North, which will lead to 219 North and Mount Davis(PA), which can be reached by taking 219 North from Backbone Mountain. They don't mark this highpoint going Northbound on route 219. If you pass it, there is a church a mile ahead that says it is "the smallest church in all 48 states". On Southbound 219, you will see a small white sign on the left of the road that says, "Maryland highpoint."
The trail is pretty steep, and gets steeper the higher you get, but it only took me 20 minutes to get to the top. The view is nice at the top, but most of the mountain is tree covered, and the summit provides the only view on the entire hike.
