Rhode Island provides a unique challenge for highpointers.  You have to be in or around Rhode Island the 5 days a year that it is open to the public.
I had already climbed Mt. Washington in New Hampshire that morning, and had to rush back down to get to Rhode Island by 5pm, because the Open Access Day is only has 'open access' during the 'day'.  Apparently, people are frequently turned away from the summit on other days, so rather than complain, I got to the summit when there was open access, so I never have to return again!

The highpoint area is attractive, as is this part of Rhode Island, with lakes and verdant trees along the road.  To get there is easy, just take route 101 from either direction, and you will find the highest hill on the road, where highpointers club representatives will guide you to the road to the summit.  From Connecticut, take Interstate 395 to exit 93, go East on 101 for a few miles, and you will see a lake at the bottom of a hill on your right.  Go up a little ways to the top of a hill where the road to the summit is on the right.  Don't bother attempting it any other day, but make it part of a longer highpoint trip.

Highpoints within a few hours include:
Frissel S. Slope (Connecticut)

Mt. Greylock (Massachusetts)
High Point (New Jersey)
Mt. Marcy (New York)
Mt. Washington (New Hampshire)
