Which reference book should you use?

 

 

  If you need to find out the meaning of a word, how to pronounce it, its language of origin or part of speech, use a dictionary.

If you need to find a map of a city, state or country, a chart or table showing the population, rainfall, plant life, or natural resources, use an atlas.

If you need information on a specific subject like people, places, events or things or if you are looking for more information for a report or project—refer to the encyclopedia

If you need information about important events, data statistics, the calendar or facts about astronomy, business, notes personalities, sports and much more-use the almanac.

TIPS FOR USING THE DICTIONARY
1  Dictionaries are in alphabetical order.
2  Use the guide words at the top of each page to help you find the
     word faster.
3  Check the table of contents to see if the book has any special 
     features like maps, foreign phrases, weights and measures, etc.
TIPS FOR USING THE ATLAS
1  To find a specific map,  check the index of the atlas.
2  Write down the page or map numbers with the coordinates.
     Example:
            Aberdeen, Scotland         56  H7
3  Turn to page (or map#) 56.  Drag your finger down the H column.
     Slide your other finger across Row 7 to the point where your fingers
      meet.
TIPS FOR USING THE ENCYCLOPEDIA
1  Encyclopedia articles are usually in alphabetical order.
2  Look under the first letter of the subject.
      Example: Look in the "Z" book to learn about zebras.
3  If you are researching a person, look under his/her last name.
    Example: For Martin Luther King, Jr., look in  "K" book under King.
4  Use guide words to find your subject faster. 
5  Reminder: If a letter spans 2 volumes, look at the first two letters of t
    subject.
    Example:
    You are looking for information on cows. There are 2 books for the le
    "C."     C-Ch   and Ci-Cz
     Cows   can be found in the Ci-Cz volume.
TIPS FOR USING THE ALMANAC
1  To find specific information, use the detailed index in the front of the 
     book.
2  You can use the Table of Contents or the Quick-Thumb Index to find
     general information.
