Architecture is about creating patterns and spaces to achieve practical purpose. Designs of architecture are used in Greek and Egyptian society. The earliest, and greatest achievement in architecture such as the Parthenon, the Pyramids, and the ziggurats are all good examples of architecture meeting both form and function requirement. The functions of these early building were for burial, worship, and entertainment. However the form was not sacrificed to function, because they stand as testaments of the skill and artistry of the early architects. All architecture since then has fought the battle between form and function, . Both form and function serve as a definition of the society in which they were created. The Ancient Pyramids served many purposes ,erected over 4500 years ago the Pyramids were thought to have been built by a lost civilization that was much too advanced for it’s time. Conventional wisdom believed the Pyramids were built for elaborate burial grounds for their highly worshiped pharaohs. An alternative theory implies they were built for a more practical use such as navigation or power generation. The Pyramids were filled with “booby traps” to protect the belongings of the deceased pharaohs. The Great Wall of China built in the seventh century B.C., to prevent the invasion of northern China by the Mongols, its six foot thick walls were thought to be strong enough to withstand an attack. The Great Wall of China is the only man made structure visible from space. Many cathedrals resemble the gothic style and perspective of the architect from whom they were designed . They were built to serve the public and freely practice religion. Many architects used gargoyles as a sign of strength and guardianship There are many famous skyscrapers in The U.S.. such as the Sears tower in Chicago, IL, The world Trade center and the Empire State building in New York, NY, and the Reunion Tower in Dallas, TX. These buildings were concieved to use alot of space without occupying a large area of land . Different cities and countries have competed for the last century to build the tallest and most advanced skyscraper. Advances in technology allow architects to construct these massive buildings with speed, style, and safety. Progressions in architecture are from to function . Each and every year architectural advances influence our society by creating building trends and styles unique to the designer. |
