1048 Omar Khayyam was born in Nishapur, Persia (present day Iran). 1070 He moved to Samarkand in Uzbekistan, which is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia. There Abu Tahir, a prominent jurist of Samakand, supported him and this allowed him to write his most famous algebra work, Treatise on Demonstration of Problems of Algebra. 1074 Khayyam wrote a book titled Maqalat fi al-Jabr wa al-Muqabila which was based on algebra. 1077 He issued an important work that solved problems with mathematics of Euclid. 1079 Khayyam led work on compiling astronomical tables and he also contributed a calendar. Khayyam measured the length of the year as 365.24219858156 days. 1092 Political events ended Khayyam's period of peaceful existence. 1118 Khayyam left Esfahan and traveled to Merv. In Commentaries on the difficult postulates of Euclid's book, Khayyam made a contribution to non-Euclidean geometry. 1120 The Rubaiyat was written. 1131 Omar Khayyam died. |
