Every culture has developed mathematics. In most cases, mathematics has spread from one culture to another. Mathematics has roots in ancient Egypt and Babylonia, and then grew rapidly into ancient Greece. Mathematics that was written in ancient Greek was translated into Arabic. Later some of this mathematics was translated into Latin and became the mathematics of Western Europe. Over a period of several hundred years, the mathematics of the Western world became the mathematics of the world. Each culture contributed to the previous while not changing the foundation that was already established. By far the most significant attribute in the growth of mathematics is the preservation of a foundation of logic. Mathematics is a discipline that seeks understanding of the patterns and structures of the human mind. Understanding has no end to its depth and mathematics seeks the highest standards of understanding by demanding difficulty in its foundations and in its development. Many people compare science and math. In a strict sense, mathematics differs from science. Science is the discipline that seeks understanding of the physical world and uses the scientific method. The scientific method is the procedure by which hypotheses are proposed and subjected to experiments designed to expose weaknesses in the hypotheses. The reason mathematics differs from this is that mathematics does not attempt to describe the physical world. Mathematical theorems are not tested against nature, but against logic. Nature does not conform to rules of logic. Logic is a human endeavor created by humans for humans requiring an exchange of ideas between humans. In conclusion, what is math? Math is logic and the processes by which logic is formed. Math is not bound by nature nor does it always conform to nature. Math is an invention of the human mind to explain the human mind. Growth in the human mind requires two elements: an understanding to logic and an understanding of how logic is affected by human relationships. The human culture will continue to grow and evolve as these two elements grow and evolve. |
