Ruruoni Kenshin, The Developers

Rurouni Kenshin

(Samurai X)

Genre: Meiiji Period Japan Samurai Action, with Comedy
Creator: Watsuki Nobuhiro
Production Studio: Sony
American Distributor: Sony

Name: Rurouni Kenshin
Type: 95 episode TV series
Available in America: Episodes 1-95
Available on Hotline: Episodes 1-95
Episodes Reviewed: Episodes 1-95

Summary: Kenshin was the most dangerous killer at the end of the fuedal area, but now has pledged his skills to the cause of helping people to make up for his past. As a wandering samurai, he and his friends confront those who would kill to topple the fledgling meiji era.

Review: A great series with excellent swordfights, good character development, and humor. Often cliched or unrealistic but still good. Unfortunately the series can't help but lose momentum after Kenshin's climatic battle with Shishio Makoto.

Rating: A-: Flawed but fun to watch nonetheless. Mind-blowing fights.

Name: Rurouni Kenshin: The Movie
Type: Movie
Available in America: Yes
Available on Hotline: Yes

Summary: Kenshin and the gang try to stop a man planning a new revolution against the government.

Review: The Kenshin Movie has exactly the same animation quality as the series itself, leading me to believe that it may have been originally planned as a story arc for TV. Basically a long episode, and I'm not sure where it fits into the storyline of the series.

Rating: B: Exactly like the series.

Name: Rurouni Kenshin (The OVA Series / Samurai X)
Type: 4 episode OVA series
Available in America: Episodes 1-4
Available on Hotline: Episodes 1-4
Episodes Reviewed: Episodes 1-4

Summary: The story of Kenshin's cross shaped scar on his cheek. As a young member of an uprising against the government, Kenshin must come to terms with those he kills.

Review: Entirely unlike the series. This is not the story of Himura Kenshin, it is the story of his alter ego, the Hitokiri Battousai. And not an "oro" in sight. The animation quality is dramatically better than the TV series. Many won't like it due to the difference, but taken on its own it is quite good.

Rating: A-: A dark feodal drama and love story.
