Ann Hyatt Hume Letter

This is a letter written by Ann Hyatt Hume on November, 13 1926. The letter was written to C.C. and G.H. Hyeatt in response to an ad in the paper confirming the sale of some horses.

Frederick Hyatt, the grandfather of Ann, was a prominent Missourian. His home is still standing, and you can see pictures of it at the following website: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/mo/county/stlouis/hyatt_house/

A transcription of the text from Ann's letter is provided below, as well as a scanned copy of the actual letter. If there are errors in the transcription please let me know. My dear Sirs:

In reading of the “Maddin horse sales” I notice one sale made to you. Now I am not so specially interested in fine horses as in fine people. Being a stranger to you I presume to explain my interest in addressing you: My paternal ancestor was Joseph Hieatt of Richmond, Madison Co Ky, whose wife was Margaret Reid. Their son (my grandfather) was Judge Frederick Hyatt who emigrated to Mo in 1811 and became a great factor in early Mo history. His descendants are more anxious to get in communication with any of the connections either Hyetts or Hieatts or Hyatts or Reids, who happen to be of the same lineage. My grandfather changed the spelling of his name while in Mo State Senate, from Hieatt to Hyatt to save confusion, but the Kentucky branch (as far as we ever knew) kept to “Hieatt”. Frederick Hyatt married Moriah Hume in Richmond in 1814. (1st wife). She was a daughter of Jno Hume. His 2nd wife was Martha Hume, a daughter of Thos. Hume, a sister in law of Thomas Tharpe of Ky. Joseph Hyatt & wife & a son, William remained in Ky. & died there in early days. My own father was Frederick’s son; like his father a public man, serving in the St. Louis bench also. His only son is now presiding on our County Court. We have so long wished to get in touch with the remnants of our Ky. family and hope this inquiry will call forth a response that may lead to interesting results. Our grandmother Margaret Reid was a daughter of Capn. Jno. Reid of Madison County. Should you happen not to be of the same family of Hieatts, I hope you will pardon my troubling you, but I most earnestly hope you can give us some light on the subject. A cousin of mine, who is from Washington D.C. and a genealogist had arranged for us to visit Ky at some near future to trace this matter, but I hope this will not be necessary. We hope to trace the Hyatts back to Revolutionary service.

Thanking you for any trouble you have taken and assure you of my appreciation for a reply. I am

Most respectfully yours
Ann Hyatt Hume
