This is a letter written by Martha Hieatt on March, 1st 1896. The letter was written to "Cousin" Sallie Hieatt Jacoby (daughter of Meredith Paxton Hieatt and Sarah Frances Mitchell), presumably the same person to which Lucy Fox Hieatt had written her letter a week earlier. I believe this Martha was married to James Hieatt, my great-great-great grandfather.

My dear Cousin:
I received you letter a few days ago and was glad to hear from you, but sorry to hear that your mother had not been well.
I am afraid I can give you very little information in regard to your Father's relations. I never knew any of my husbands relations intimately, but Elijah Hieatt and his family of Lancaslin, Garrad Co, but it has been forty years since I saw any of them, and don't know whether any of them are living or not. I have never heard of the Hieatt's of Versailles, so can not tell you whether they are relations or not. They are not near relations of my Husbands I know, because all of his immediate relations moved to Missouri, - however they may be related, distantly as I never knew any one of the name that was not related, I should think your Aunts and your Cousin Will of Shelby, Co. could give you more information than I.
This is all I can tell you in regard to the family, and sorry I can not give you more information.
Would like so much to have you make us a visit. I always enjoyed my visits to your home very much indeed, and would love to have you return (illegibile). We have no girls at our house now, as both of my grand daughters are married. We would try to make things pleasant for you however.
Hoping you will be able to learn something more definite in regard to your fathers family. I remain
