Charities and Groups Princess Diana Supported Prior to 1996
At the time of her divorce in the summer of 1996, Princess Diana sent out letters cutting her ties with about 100 charities and roups for whom she had been President or Patron. She did this because she wished to concentrate her efforts on fewer charities, since she felt she could become more actively involved in their work by this means, and because she felt that her stature had diminished and that the charities could be more effectively served by one of the other members of the royal family. Quite rightly, the charities she dropped knew that she was their star attraction and they could never get anyone of her drawing power to replace her, but their pleas and widespread criticism in the press did not move her to change her mind, so at the time of her death she was supporting only eight charities, to which you can find links under the Charities section of this site.
I have long felt, however, that
eventually Princess Diana would have reconsidered her decision and quite
likely would have resumed patronage of some of her earlier charities, as
many of them dealt with issues of long-standing interest to her, such as
children, persons with special needs, the aged,
hospitals, dance, and drug abuse.
Or perhaps her sons may become patrons of some of them. In any event, I
think they are worthy of support, especially the smaller organizations
which became visible as a result of her patronage, but I am only
providing a list of the organization names, since the sheer number of groups
would be a nightmare to keep current in regards to their addresses or links.
Those that have web sites can probably be found by typing their names with
quotation marks around them into the search box at Google
UK. If you can't locate one of them and really wish to find it, please
contact me and I will see if I can find it.
This is by no means a complete
list, but I will add names if I find more of them. Many of them came from
a list of 61 charities that she was "actively supporting" at the time of
her death which was included in the paperback Diana: The People's Princess
1961-1997: a Photographic Tribute by Arthur Edwards, Written with Charles
Rae, which was published by The Sun newspaper in 1997.
Others came from The Definitive
Diana, A-Z by Sally Moore (Chicago: Contemporary Books, 1991), which
had a list of past and present committments in the entry on Presidencies
and Patronages, as well as additional information on areas of interest
or specific organizations in the entries about Barnardo's, Birthright,
Blind, British Lung Foundation, Child Accident Prevention Trust, Deaf,
