Fence Policy

Highland Park Fence Policy

Effective 6/3/97

Fences shall be no higher than 6 feet at any point along it's length. Exceptions will be made where property backs up to undeveloped property or Jones Bridge Road.

Fence style and construction shall be decided on a case by case basis. In general, style will be dictated by the next closest fence on the same side of the street. If no style driver is present, design will be positive scallop with shadow box construction recommended. This will be decided on a case by case basis.

Fences will enclose only backyards, ie. that area behind the back face of the house. Fences can extend toward front of house 1 foot beyond this line to simplify construction. In cases where basement doors, basement doors with adjoining windows, or rear porches are present, fences may extend forward 2 feet beyond these items. Generally, side yard fences should never extend forward more than half the distance to the front of the house. These limitations will be decided on a case by case basis.

Any gate in the fence along a property line are generally discouraged. If the owner insists on a gate on the property line, he must: 1) obtain written approval of the owner of that property, 2) construct the gate to open inward, and 3) make the gate consistent in appearance with the rest of the fence.

Please contact the Highland Park Board if you have any questions regarding this policy !
