Early 1970's, America was
still reeling from the turbulent 60's and war protest, "inflation" had crept
into our conversations, and our "days of innocence" were definitely over.
|
Locally by 1972, we had the "Plaza" with stores that
included Horne's, G.C. Murphy's, Sun Drug, Isaly's, Princess Pastries, A&P,
and Howard Johnson's. Betty Gay, Fashion Hosiery, and Kroger's had already
come and gone.
We were entering into the world of fast food with
Winky's and McDonald's, and the "downtowns" were beginning to shrink, as
shoppers began to prefer malls and one-stop shopping.
On the National level, the Cold War, between the Soviet
Union and its satellite states in Eastern Europe, and the pro-American
Free West, was still a concrete reality. President Richard Nixon not only
made an unprecedented trip to Red China, but became the first U.S. President
to visit Moscow.
"Environmental Protection" was an avant-garde concept
with only a minority of supporters when we were born, but by the time we
were seniors, it was a viable cause, although still a struggle. Today, of
course, it is a concept which conservatives and liberals support without
question. |
