Currency on Pern is called the mark. These are made from wood, and are small disks about the size of a US quarter - about one inch in diameter and two or three millimeters thick. Each mark is stamped with a Craft or Hold insignia on one side, and the mark's value on the other. No matter where a mark comes from, the stamped value is the same - it is a type of insult to value one type of mark over another. Mark denominations are as follows: 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 5, and 10. For fractional amounts, the mark is stamped with a horizontal line over the number. Special care is put into the making of marks. First, a strong, durable wood must be collected - skybroom wood is one of the preferred ones. Then it must be treated and stained. Once blanks have been created, they are shipped to the various Halls and Holds for the final process. Only a Lord Holder or Hallmaster have the special tools needed to stamp each mark. Without these tools, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to create the design. Overall, the entire process has been made hard to counterfeit. The mark's value and how much goods will cost is determined at the Council each year. In the Present Pass, the mark's value has been decreased due to the poor harvests.
