Dictionary of Pern Terms

Have you read a term on the website or in a post that you are not familiar with? We submit, for your sanity, a Pernese dictionary. Any additions are more than welcome, and can be submitted to the Board. The basic definitions were taken straight from the Dragondex, but more information has been added as deemed necessary.


Pern Term Definition
Agenothree (HNO3) a common chemical on Pern; used in flamethrowers
Between an area of nothingness and sensory deprivation between here and there.
Black rock analogous to coal
Candlemark Another term for hour; technicially, this word comes from Mercedes Lackey and not Pern.
Day (or Dawn) Sisters a trio of stars visible from Pern; unknown to Pernese, these "stars" are actually the spaceships that brought them to Pern
Deadglow a numbskull, a stupid
Fellis a flowering tree
Fellis juice a juice made from the fruit of the fellis tree; a soporific
Firestone phosphine bearing mineral which dragons chew to produce flame
Glow a light source which can be carried in a handbasket
High Reaches mountains on the northern continent of Pern
Hold a place where the common people live; originally they were cut into the mountains and hillsides
Impression the joining of mins of a dragon and his rider-to-be at the moment of the dragon's hatching.
Interval the period of time between passes, generally 200 Turns.
Klah a hot stimulating drink made of tree bark and tasting faintly of cinnamon. (Recipe)
Long Interval an Interval twice the length of a usual one, with an additional 50 turns when Thread does not fall (Interval / No Thread / Interval)
Lord Holder A man who is in charge of a principal hold. The title is inherited and the Lord is responsible for the running of his hold and the well-being of its people. The holders in return supply the Lord with materials and generally do his bidding.
Numbweed a salve made from a local plant which is used as an external anaesthetic
Pass the time when the Red Star is close enough to drop Thread on Pern. Usually about 50 years in length.
Rukbat a golden G-type star in the Sagittarian sector with five planets - Pern is one of these
Sevenday a Pernese week; the days are not named
Shards a Pernese oath
Shells a Pernese oath
Thread a mindless organism dropped from the Red Star which devours all organic material. It can only be killed by starvation, water, extreme cold and fire
Timor the smaller of Pern's two moons
Turn one Pernese year, a little more than 366 days
Watchdragon the dragon and rider who have pulled watch duty on the Weyr roster or, more rarely, at a nearby Hold. A 'watch' is four hours long
Watchwher a nocturnal, photosensitive relative of dragons used as a guard at night. These beasts are very territorial and will kill any stranger
weyr / Weyr any place where a dragon lives, usually a cave in a mountain or extint volcano. When capitalized, it denotes a place where many dragons live
Weyrcrafter The main crafter in a Weyr, usually a rider. There may be other crafters in a Weyr, but this person oversees all others in his Craft
Weyrleader the rider whose bronze has flown the senior queen in a Weyr. He is in charge of the fighting wings of dragons and responsible for the training and discipline of dragonriders in his Weyr, and with the Weyrwoman the general running of the Weyr.
Weyrlingmaster an older rider with good skills who is responsible for the training and discipline of weyrlings; this position is generally changed every few turns
Weyrwoman The rider of a senior queen in a Weyr; she is in charge of the running of it, and is the highest ranking person in the Weyr
Wherry a large avian, fairly dumb but can be a nusiance
