If an animal is not listed on this page, Board approval is required to mention it in a post. There are hundreds of animals alive on Earth that either were not alive at the time to take to Pern, or they did not adapt to Pern. Types of Animals Alive on Pern Canines - These are descended from the dogs that Pernese brought. They are generally of small to medium size, making them ideal hunters to enter tunnelsnake holes. Breeds from Earth (golden retreivers, great danes, etc), have not survived in memory. What this means is that while an animal may be of or look like a certain breed, it can not be called it. Canines are also used to turn spits in a kitchen. They are attached to a rope or chain, and their movement causes the spit to be turned, thus fully and evenly cooking whatever is on the spit. A canine's fur tends to be shaggy and long - a short haired dog is a thing of the past and the South. Felines - Felines are another animal bred to protect human settlements from predators such as wherries and tunnelsnakes. Like canines, felines have long, thick coats. They are a little larger than their ancestors, standing about a foot and a half tall and weighing around twenty to thirty-five pounds. Felines are always welcome in a kitchen, and their conquests at keeping insects and Pern's rodents at bay are always rewarded with scraps. Firelizards - The cousins of the great dragons have become a myth. Children boast of having seen one, but they are generally not believed. No one has ever caught one of these creatures for they disappear whenever they see a human. Legend has it they come in the same colors that dragons do. Note: In time, firelizards may be introduced. Until then, firelizards are a thing of myth and legend only. Fowl - Geese, quail, and chickens have survived through the centuries and were allowed free run of the place before Thread struck. Now they live in coops, which are guarded by children and felines. These are domesticated only in the sense that they stay in one area - where the food is. Anybody thinking to raise one as a pet quickly becomes the laughingstock of a Hold. Fowl are typically cheap sources of food, as are the eggs they produce. Herdbeasts - Runners - |
