Training Philosophy and Principles Philosophy For beginners we want to introduce the enjoyment of running and fitness in a low-stress environment. We do not pressure kids to compete or "train" beyond what they personally desire to do. Rather, we introduce training and fitness in the form of high-energy games. For advanced group we want to keep the same high-energy fun attitude while helping maturing athletes accomplish personally set goals. Again, we focus on the personal needs of the individual. It is true some runners are highly competitive and desire training and winning races while many others simply enjoy seeing their friends and keeping fit and active as a healthy lifestyle. We encourage members to set goals and achieve them whether they are to go to Nationals or increase their fitness. Typical practice: BEGINNER GROUP Easy 800 meter run on Kelsy's Loop to warm up body, stretch major muscles groups, push-ups and crunches with main emphasis on correct/safe form. We prefer kids do one good push up correctly vs. ten sloppy "virtual"push ups. After this first 20 minutes we will run to a destination within Bush/Deep Wood Park to play a high-energy game. Once the game time has ended we will run back to the parking lot for our cool down. Games range from tag, fox and hounds, catch the rabbit, king cone, and several other games we have made up over the years of practices. We choose games that include the fast as well as the beginners often emphasizing team concepts and working together. ADVANCED GROUP 15 minute warm up, stretch, running drills, then workout. Workouts vary day to day. We may run a long 5-8 miles or 200s on the track or hill repeats. This group is motivated and more goal oriented to achieve higher levels of fitness or competitive ability. Workouts are progessive and challenging. Athletes are encouraged to set specific goals then we work together as a team to achieve them. This group is very social by nature and we often have get-togethers after practice at Dairy Queen or Walery's Pizza. |
