The Premonition

A young braided soldier in a black Gundam was fighting in space against many other mobile suits. He was doing very well at first. Killing off one by one, he slowly left a trace of debris behind him. One mobile suit, another black one, named Orion, made a surprise attack and shot off the boy’s scythe. Then it attacked the arms of the Gundam, seeing that without those, it would be merely impossible for the Gundam to win. The boy cursed at the suit, which had cut off both arms of his Gundam and was gliding in front of him. Orion seemed to grin at him. He took in his hands the self-destruction button and said ‘Forgive me, Hilde.’ The button didn’t work though. The dreary Orion appeared right in front of the Gundam's cockpit. There was no sound, just a bright flash that echoed throughout the black void. Orion’s pilot laughed and flew away. In the middle of the debris was a small teenage looking boy with a braid. His eyes were closed and his mouthed was curved into a small smile. His lifeless body floated deeper into the darkness of outer space.

A dark-blue haired girl, Hilde, woke from a nightmare. She sat in bed staring out the window at the streetlights and rare passing of cars. She thought about her strange nightmare.

‘Duo, what was that dream about?’

Hilde got out of bed and headed for Duo’s room. She stood in the doorway of his room looking at his sleeping form under the covers. She smiled and went back to her room. "Just a dream…" She said and went back to sleep.

Early the next morning Hilde woke up, and sat in bed trying to remember her dream. Not being able to she went to the kitchen, following the faint smell of eggs and bacon.

"Mmmmm… Something smells delicious!" Hilde looked over to the stove to find the source of the tempting smell. Duo was frying eggs on the stove and had bacon sitting on the table for two. "Morning, Duo. I’ve never seen you make breakfast before. Let alone, any food!"

Duo scratched his head and stretched. "Well, you were asleep when I woke up. I was hungry and we didn’t have anything to eat so I went to the store."

Hilde sat at the table and said, "Fair enough for me! Any bad dreams?"

"Perfect night. You?"

Hilde paused. "Nope."

Simple conversation went on this way over breakfast.

"That was the best, Duo! Thanks!" Hilde said while putting her dishes in the sink "I’m gonna go take a shower. I’ll be out in 15 minutes or so," Hilde said while walking to her bathroom.

15 minutes later

Hilde got dressed in her usual pink beret, an oversized black T-shirt, and her black pants. She went to the kitchen and got some tea (Authors Note: Sweet tea. Lipton!) and looked around for Duo. She walked back down the hallway towards his room. His door was partly open so she peeked in. ‘He better not be getting dressed.’ Hilde smiled at her little mischievous thought. She giggled at what she saw. Duo sat on his bed with his hair all down trying to do his braid. Hilde came in and helped him do his braid in silence.

"Duo are you okay? You seem quieter than usual," Hilde wondered.

Duo shrugged and got up when she was finished. "Hilde," he said drearily, "some guys came by while you were in the shower." He held up a picture of a mobile suit and picked up his cross.

Hilde’s eyes widened. ‘He only wears that cross into battles!’

"Here", Duo said and handed Hilde the picture. "This mobile suit was spotted a few days ago orbiting around Earth along with 30 or so other suits. The people who found it also found out this one suit is made out of Gundanium! When a shuttle came in yesterday from Earth the Shuttle-port pilots asked who it was that was circling the Earth like that. The pilot of this Gundam said ‘Your worst nightmare’ and sliced the shuttle in half. They are not our friends. The guys that came here want me to take Deathscythe-Hell and destroy it. They call it Orion."

Hilde’s heart dropped. She knew how this would end and didn’t want it to happen. It was like she had a premonition about Duo’s death. ‘Oh, god, Duo! It’s name is the same, it’s looks are the same, it’s just like my dream!’ She looked up at Duo and asked meekly "Can’t they use Heero’s Gundam? Isn’t it stronger?"

Duo sighed. "No. I’m the closest to the Gundam’s whereabouts. They didn’t want to disturb Heero when they could easily just get rid of it by asking me."

Hilde noticed how dark and evil the Gundam looked. ‘It’s just the same…’ She looked up at Duo again and said, "Duo you can’t go." in a stern voice.

Duo looked at her. "Hilde, I know your unhappy I have to leave but it’s not my choice. No one knows what these enemies can do. I’m gonna stop the fire before it spreads." He smiled at her. Hilde gazed at the floor.

"Duo, you can’t leave!" She yelled.

Duo sat beside her. "I know. You’re afraid I’ll get hurt. I won’t I promise."

"Yes, you will! I just know it’ll happen! You’ll die out there!" Hilde looked at him, trying to stay calm.

Duo said, "You’re talking nonsence."

"No, I’m not Duo! I know you’ll get hurt! Why won’t you listen to me?!" Hilde yelled at him.

"Calm down Hilde! Your being hysterical!" Duo shook Hilde by her shoulders.

"DUO! You WILL get killed! Stay HERE!" Duo glared at her, stood up, and raised his hand. Hilde stared at him already expecting what came next. His hand came down across her face. Hilde was stunned and gengerly touched her cheek. Duo stared at his hand, then at the red mark across Hilde’s face. She stared at Duo’s eyes, with tears coming to her own.

"Hilde…"

Before he could finish his sentence, Hilde shoved him out of the way and ran into her room. She locked the door behind her and leaned against the wall. Duo walked to her room and heard stifled crying from inside.

"Hilde, I didn’t mean to", he said through the door.

"Leave."

"What?"

"Leave! You’re risking your life but you don’t seem to care. So neither do I! Now leave!" Hilde yelled at Duo between sniffles. She tried her best to keep her voice steady. Duo didn’t think she would ever forgive him so he thought he would talk it over when he got back. He left a note under her door and left.

Hilde heard Duo leave, without saying goodbye. She looked down at the note Duo slipped under the door for her. It read:

Hilde,

I am so sorry for our fight. I didn’t mean to hurt you like that. I know you probably won’t forgive me for that and I know you had good reason, but I was careless. I’m sorry. When I get back, if you don’t throw me out of the house, I’ll treat you to a great dinner (no, not cooked by me ^.^) and we’ll party all night. That’s a promise! I’ll miss you.

Ai shiteru,

Duo

Hilde blushed. ‘Ai shiteru? Does he really mean that?’ She smiled and sat down at her computer. She didn’t pay attention to the computer though. Hilde clicked on the TV and watched the news, hoping Duo would come on. Not seeing him on there, she went to the kitchen for something to eat.

"Black against white. Who will win? This unexpected turn of events will leave the colonies baffled! Two major forces of mankind have started a battle in space near Colony L2. Deathscythe, one of the 5 Gundams and Orion, an unknown new Gundam are beating each other in a fight that will probably last for hours." The reporter said as the fight went on.

Hilde stared at the TV, watching the battle in live broadcast. She watched Deathscythe as it slashed at Orion and as Orion dodged his attack.

"It seems that Deathscythe is having some problems. Let’s see if he can defeat Orion."

Orion sweeped around to the back of Deathscythe and hit it full force. Orion sliced the arms off Deathscythe and appeared in front of him. ‘Just like my dream! It’s just like it!’

Hilde sat on the couch and prayed that it wouldn’t end like her nightmare did.

Then she saw a bright flash of light and both of the Gundams exploded. "NO!" Hilde yelled at the TV. "NO!"

"The fight is over. Both of the Gundams are destroyed. The pilot of Deathscythe made a huge sacrafice for his Colony. I hope you all feel the pain I do…." Hilde threw her remote at the TV, making it click off. She sat on the floor for a few seconds debating if Duo was gone or not. She cut the TV back on and watched the explosion in a slow motion replay. "The pilot of Deathscythe is being brought to the L2 Hospital. Only family members will be able to see him. We don’t know if he’ll live or not yet."

Hilde left her house and jumped on her motorcycle. ‘I’m family.’ She sped towards the hospital.

"Do you have an appointment?" The secretary said to Hilde as she passed the desk.

"Where is the Gundam pilot’s room?" Hilde asked intently.

"Um… yeah. It’s on the third floor, room 188. Are you family?" the secretary asked her as she walked off.

"Yeah, I’m his sister." Hilde went to the elevator and impatiently waited for the right floor. She went straight to his room where a doctor and a nurse were watching over him. "Uh, can I have some privacy?"

The doctor came over to her and asked if she was family. She told him she was and shoved him out the door. Hilde closed the door and looked at Duo with all the equipment hooked up to him. An IV ran out of his arm and he had an oxygen mask lying beside his head. Hilde sat beside his bed and ran her fingers through his hair.

"I’m sorry Duo… Ai… Ai shiteru." Hilde started silently crying. "Duo, Don’t leave me. Remember what your promised?"

Duo groaned and looked at Hilde. "I remember, Hilde." He smiled and hugged her. "I’m sorry."

"When you get out of here, you’re taking me out to eat. Understand?" Hilde stood up and crossed her arms. Duo laughed at her and motioned for her to come over to him. She did, and they hugged. "I love you, Duo."

"Same with you, babe."
