Duo waltzed into the kitchen and flopped down onto a stool. He watched Hilde as she rinsed some dishes off. ‘Crap!!! I was supposed to do the dishes! Ohh, she’s gonna kill me… Maybe I can make it to my room before she says anything!’
Duo got up from his stool and tiptoed backwards halfway across the kitchen, when his heel hit the corner of a wall. "OWWW!!! Owww, owww…" He grabbed his foot and put his other hand over his mouth, attempting to hop the rest of the way to his room. Duo’s braid had fluttered in front of his face making him run into a wall and fall on his back, knocking the air out of him. Hilde cut off the running water and heard him crash onto the floor. She turned around fast enough to see him clutch his chest, and try to breathe. His other hand was still holding his foot.
Hilde, surprised, walked over to him to survey his predicament. ‘Hmm… I should get a camera…’ She smirked at the thought, then changed to a very sincere look of pity. "What happened Duo?!"
"I tripped," Duo said as he caught his breathe, "and fell, and got the wind knocked outta me." Hilde smiled and helped him get up. "I’m gonna go get cleaned up," he said, "I’ve been working in the junkyard for a few hours and got some scraps for your car. I found this thing called a neon flourecsant light, they say it looks cool."
Hilde thanked him then went back to the kitchen when she noticed the dishes. She turned around fast enough to see his door slam. "HEY!!! YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO DO THE DISHES MORON!" She heard him say sorry so she smiled and went back to her duties.
*
Later that night Hilde was watching a rerun of Dark Angel when she heard Duo finally come out of his room. He had taken a shower and had his hair undon. He was wearing a black shirt with black boxers. Duo dragged his feet over to the couch where Hilde was sitting. He was about to sit down when Hilde flung her feet onto the couch. Duo turned around and pouted. "Awwww, c’mon Hilde!!! I’ve had a long day!"
Hilde glared at him. "You think you’ve had a long day, while I’m the one doing the dishes, vacuuming, dusting, making your bed, and everything else in here!"
Duo finally got to sit down. He watched the show for a few moments, but kept glancing at Hilde. He sighed, got Hilde’s attention, and leaned over to her. He wrapped one arm around her slender waist and put his other hand on her cheek. She backed onto the couch, and Duo crawled up above her, close enough for her to feel his breath. Her breathing was staggered and loud. ‘Oh my god… oh my god… oh my god…’ She sunk her head into the black leather, with Duo’s following her. He was only inches away from her face when he whispered, "I’ll make it up to you."
Duo almost touched her lips with his when he grabbed her waist with both hands and started tickling her.
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! DUOOO! STOP IT!" Hilde convulsed with laughter, and eventually kicked Duo enough for him to stop.
"See! Toldja I’d make it up to you." Duo winked at her. "I’m going to bed. G’night Hilde!"
"Night Duo! Sweet dreams!" Hilde smiled at Duo as he walked to his room. She layed on the couch and sighed. ‘He’s never done anything like that. What was he thinking? What am I thinking? Do I like him like that?’ Hilde was surprised she asked herself that question. "Naa!"
*
Duo crawled into bed and pulled up his blanket to his chin. He turned over on his side and let his hair fall in his face. ‘Hilde…’ Duo bit his lip. ‘Why did I do that? Jeez, I probably confused the heck outta her…’ He smiled. ‘I shoulda kissed her… God, I really should have kissed her.’ Duo fell asleep dreaming about that very thought.
*
Hilde was asleep on the couch when Duo came downstairs in the morning. He smiled and put his jacket over her. Shinigami leaned down next to her sleeping form and rested his head on the couch. ‘Man… What I would give…’ He kissed her lightly on the forehead and went outside. He sat on the porch until Hilde woke up. She came outside with his jacket wrapped around her.
"How long have you been out here?" Hilde asked as she sat beside him.
Duo shrugged. "Half an hour maybe."
That day was normal, but the whole time Duo thought about what he did the night before. Hilde also thought about Duo and that event. After dinner, he took his shower and Hilde helped him with his hair. She went to bed early, but didn’t close her door all the way. Duo got curious and snuck into her room. He went over to her bedside and watched her sleep; he was memorized by every curve of her body underneath the covers. He stayed there for a few seconds then walked to the counter where his motorcycle keys were. Duo figured he needed to go get a drink and think about what was going on. He drove to Club CL2 and looked at the place. He remembered when he was last there.
*
"Duo, you should go out. You’ve been staying in your room since Sunday." Hilde tried to reason with Duo. She sat beside him on his bed. Duo had been staying in his room, and not eating, for four days. He was wearing his clothes from that Sunday, and his hair was undone and messy. It covered his face from Hilde’s eyes. He was slouched and staring at the floor. "You’re dwelling in the past Duo, Solo loved you and he wouldn’t want you to be like this."
Four days had past since the rebuilding of the Maxwell Graveyard. It was cold and foggy. A dark day, with low clouds and a mist. Duo went to see what they were doing and saw a terrifying site. He stopped behind the orange ropes to look at the hillside where they were excavating graves and piling coffins. As two men put another coffin on the pile, another threw it’s gravestone beside the pile. The gravestone hit against the coffins and rolled down the hill to Duo’s feet. He read the name –Solo- then looked up to see the coffins tilting and crash to the ground. They rolled down the hill, and Duo had enough time to get out of the way. Many broke and bones lay scattered at the bottom of the hill and on the road. He glanced at a coffin, the one that was lying on the top, and noticed a small skeleton with ragged clothing inside. Duo had chills go up his spine as he recognized the clothes. "Solo…" he whispered as he looked at the child’s form. Duo backed away from the hideous site, turned, and ran.
"Hilde… I saw him. In the coffin. It was Solo, Hilde. Solo…" His words cracked and he shook with fear. Hilde hugged him lightly, trying to calm him. She tried to look at his face from her position beside him. Since that did not work, she looked at the floor and noticed teardrops..
"Duo, you’re crying! Oh, Duo…" She soothed him, hugged him tighter, and ran her fingers through his hair slowly assuring him she was there. He hugged her back and cried on her shoulder. "Thank you…"
*
Duo put his hair in a ponytail and changed into a different set of clothes. Hilde was lying on his bed, for she had fell asleep on his shoulder. Duo decided to get a drink at the Club CL2…
*
Hilde hadn’t heard Duo come in the night before. She knew she fell asleep on his bed, and he left. She got up and went to the main entrance of their house to see if he was home yet. Hilde found Duo asleep on the couch in the living room.
She decided to wake him up and tell him to get ready for work. She knelt down beside the couch and shook him. "Duo, Duo! It’s time to wake up!" Duo moaned and rolled over so his back was turned to her.
"I wanna sleep some more…" He groggily said.
Hilde sighed, then noticed a peculiar smell around him. She sniffed Duo’s matted hair and made a disgusted look. "Duo! You’ve been drinking!" He didn’t reply. Hilde shook Duo and got him to turn around so she could see his face. "Duo, how much did you drink?"
Duo looked at Hilde; his cheeks were scratched up and he had a black eye. "Ummm… I dunno, a few bottles."
"Bottles?!" Hilde looked down at the couch. "What happened to your face?" She asked without looking up. Duo touched his cheek gingerly and cringed when he found a scratch.
"I dunno… I can’t remember anything." Duo tried to sit up but grabbed his side and fell back. "Oww… Jeez, when did all this happen?" He looked at his hand that was clutching his side, which was covered in blood. Hilde’s eyes widened as she looked down at him.
"Duo, you’re bleeding! Here… I’ll help." Hilde untucked his black shirt and shoved it up so she could find the wound. Duo winced from her frustration with his shirt. She got up and grabbed a wet towel to clean the wound with. Duo looked up at her with scared violet eyes. Hilde didn’t notice him whimper when she put medicine on it. "DUO! This looks like someone cut you open! Damn, what did you do last night?"
"I… I think… I think I got in a fight."
"Well, I wouldn’t put it past you. Especially if you were drunk. But for me, don’t go back there okay? Really, I don’t want you to get yourself killed. You’re the only person I got left in my life."
*
When Duo got to the club, he remembered what Hilde said about the last time he came. He shrugged it off and figured nothing would happen this time and he would watch his drinking.
*
Hilde was jerked away by the sound of the front door. She rubbed her eyes and looked at the clock. ‘3 AM? Must be Duo, the door was locked…’ She got up and opened her door. Duo was in the kitchen at the sink. He was running water and splashing it on his face. Hilde looked at him curiously and walked up behind him. "Duo? What are you doing out at this time?" Duo didn’t reply at first, he just turned around and looked at her with blotchy eyes.
"I’m… I was out…" Duo slurred his speech as he replied. Hilde smelled the odor she remembered from many months ago.
‘You’ve been drinking. Dammit Duo, why have you been drinking?’ Hilde touched Duo’s face and spoke to him slowly. "Are you okay?"
Duo nodded and staggered a bit. Hilde helped him over to the couch where they both sat.
"What’s wrong Duo? You only drink when something bad happened…"
Duo groaned and tilted Hilde’s head up to his. He tried to kiss her but she pushed him away. Duo grabbed her back and pulled her into it. Hilde let out a startled cry then she closed her eyes, enjoying the kiss. ‘But he’s drunk!’ she thought. ‘I shouldn’t be doing this.’ Hilde tried to shove him away again, but he held her tightly to his own body. He pushed her into a deeper kiss, as he shoved her onto the couch. Hilde screeched and yelled at him to let her go. Duo didn’t listen to her and laid on her. Hilde tried to kick him and threw punches, but Duo blocked them. She finally got a blow at his face, which just made him angry. Duo pinned her onto the couch and brought his hand up her thigh and under her nightshirt.
"DUO! Let me go! Stop it!" Hilde screamed and attempted to shove him away and off her, but he had her down on the couch and wouldn’t get up.
"Isn’t this what ya want, babe?" Duo asked, his breath reeked of alcohol. Hilde was scared out of her mind, and didn’t know what to do. She did want it, but she knew it was a bad idea, especially when he was drunk. Hilde struggled with Duo, but he held her down until she was tired out and he had the upper hand.
‘I can’t let him… He can’t do this!’ Hilde felt Duo get ahold her and blacked out.
*
Hilde woke up the next morning on the couch with a blanket over her. She sat up and rubbed her eyes, but immediately covered herself. ‘Where are my clothes?!’ She tried to remember what happened, but regretted thinking about it. She stood up to go to her room, but sat down when she felt a pain in her stomach and legs. ‘Jeez… feels like I was at the gym…’ She had an upset stomach, but knew it wasn’t that time of month. Hilde decided to deal with the aches and get to her room. ‘I need clothes, now.’
Hilde changed into her red shirt, black pants, and red beret. She sat on her bed and thought about the night before. ‘How could Duo do that to me. You’d think if he was smart enough, even if he was drunk, that he’d remember my morals. Oh, Duo… Now what am I supposed to do? What if I’m…? No, dummy, that doesn’t happen the first time! Would it?’ Hilde peeked out of her room, trying to find Duo. He didn’t seem to be anywhere, so she tiptoed to his door. Duo was asleep on his bed. Hilde lip trembled and she walked away. She took his keys and drove to the drug-store.
*
Hilde parked Duo’s motorcycle in the garage and walked to the front door, bag in hand. She unlocked the door and Duo stood in the entrance, arms crossed. Hilde dropped her bag and keys.
"Hilde, next time you decide to go somewhere on my motorcycle tell me. I freaked out!" Duo walked up to her and picked up her bag and his keys. "Here’s your…" Duo looked at the contents of the bag, "pregnancy test?! Hilde, what’s goin on?!" Hilde looked down at the ground.
"I…" She tried to cross to the living room, but Duo blocked her way.
"Is there something going on?" Duo asked her, looking concerned.
"I didn’t think you would remember anything." Hilde’s voice cracked. "I figured you’d think today was just another normal day. I was right." She began to cry, but tried to hide it from Duo. She crouched down and cried into her hands. Duo tried to hug her, but Hilde shoved him away and got up, ready to run to her room. Duo caught her wrist and trapped her against the wall.
"You aren’t going anywhere til you tell me what’s goin on. Hilde, I care about you, you can tell me."
"I… you…" Hilde couldn’t find the words, and didn’t want to say anything.
"Me? What? Did I do something?" Hilde nodded. "Are you seeing somebody?" Hilde shook her head. "Why’d you buy that?" Duo pointed at the test and stared at Hilde waiting for an answer.
"You. It’s your fault if it says yes. If I am pregnant." Duo was finally catching on and he lowered his head.
"It was last night wasn’t it," he mumbled. Hilde nodded. "Dammit… Hilde, I’m sorry. I-"
"You were drunk. And you used me, Duo! You took advantage of me. How could you?" Duo was silent, then reached down and picked up the pregnancy test.
"Here. See what comes out." Hilde hesitated, then took it from Duo’s hand and walked to the bathroom.
Duo sat on the couch and waited for Hilde. He had a split second vision of what had happened and shook his head. ‘Stupid! Stupid baka. C’mon Duo, why couldn’t you have gotten in a fight or somethin? It wouldn’t have hurt Hilde…’ Duo tapped his fingers on the coffee table. Hilde came out a while later.
"Well?" Duo asked her, holding his breath.
"Negative. I’m not pregnant." Hilde didn’t sit down on the couch, but on a chair. She didn’t look at Duo. They were silent for a while; neither knew exactly what to say.
"Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?" Duo tried to reason with her.
"If you come up with something, I’ll be in my room. I need to think." Hilde walked to her room and shut the door behind her. Duo watched her leave then slammed his fist onto the table.
‘Dammit! I should’ve done something… Does she hate me now?’ Duo walked outside and sat on the porch. He closed his eyes and wished it was all just a nightmare.
*
Hilde sat on her bed thinking about Duo. She heard him go outside and figured he was sitting on the porch. ‘That’s where he always goes when he’s sad or upset.’ She got up and walked to the porch where Duo sat. His eyes were closed so Hilde thought he was asleep. She sat beside him and hugged him. "You should have listened to me. That place is cursed, never go there."
Duo hugged her back and whispered apologies for at least 20 minutes.
"Have you learned your lesson, Duo?" Hilde asked him afterwards.
Duo smiled and nodded.
