Like many great artists, Edouard Manet spent a large portion of his career having his work ridiculed by the artistic establishment. He was never fully recognized for his progressive styles until after his death. Although Manet didn't define himself as such and did not follow many of their rules, he is generally linked with the French Impressionists and was a good friend of Claude Monet. Manet's work contained a sensitivity to detail and nuance combined with freedom of technique and pallet. Roses in a Crystal Vase was put to canvas in 1883, and I find it to be one of his more appealing works.
