Raymond Bailey was born on May 6, 1905 in San
Francisco. Not much information is available about his
early life, but it is known that he was fired from his job at
a movie studio for trying to sneak into a mob scene
druing filming of a movie. After failing to launch a stage
career in New York, he spent several years as a seaman
travelling to many parts of the world.
Bailey tried to get into the Hollywood scene during the
Depression, but met with no success. After working in
community theater in Hawaii, he returned once more to
Hollywood in 1938 and managed to secure some bit parts.
Some of the movies he appeared in include: No Time for
Sergeants, Al Capone, The Caine Mutiny Court Martial,
and Mr. Roberts. Bailey performed in more than 300
television shows BEFORE winning the role of Milburne
Drysdale on "The Beverly Hillbillies." According to the
cast, Bailey was not a happy man and was often difficult
to get along with, complaining constantly.
Bailey was married to Gaby George and lived in Laguna
Niguel, California until he died of a heart attack on April
15 (tax day...a fitting end to a banker), 1980.
