237. George Washington MEACHAM
Mr. Ingersoll went to California in the "Orpheus" in 1849-the second sailing vessel that left New York after the discovery of gold there. He mined for sometime in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas, but finally bought a ranch near San Francisco where he lived until 1863,when with a hundred others he lost his home by reason of a flaw in the title of the old Spanish Grant . He then went to Nevada while it was still a territory, and continuing in the cattle business in which he had been engaged more or less from the time he arrived in California, he became quite wealthy, but the terrible cold winter of 1888-9 killed all the cattle and he again lost everything.
