From Albany I drove on to Esperance then Norseman and set out on the long drive across the Nullabor. The drive should have taken three days. However, after my first nights stop at Madura Pass (500km out from Norseman) I got up to set off on the second day and made it about 10km out when the oil light came on. So I went back to Madura which is just a motel, campsite and petrol station in the middle of nowhere. There was a trail of oil following me up the road! I put in more oil and a couple of kind hearted chaps had a look under 'Dianna' to see if they could find out where the oil was leaking from - they couldn't. So I called the insurance company who arranged for a tow truck to come and pick up 'Dianna' and take me back to Norseman at a cost of $1500! Anyway, when the guy finally arrived he had a look under 'Dianna' and said that when I had had the service in Albany the garrage hadn't tightened up the oil filter! As you can imagine I was not a happy bunny. Anyway the next day I drove on again and eventually made it across in four days...Not the end of the oil filter story though - When I got as far as Port Pirie in South Australia I had the oil filter changed and what do you know...the garrage in Albany had fitted the wrong oil filter! They eventually agreed to pay up - after I threatened to return to Albany! |
