Strange Acquaintances

By Angela and Geraldine Cheong
Part 1
May 1998

A flash of silver streaked through the empty hallways like lightning. The fox paused suddenly. It was strikingly magnificent in its beauty. Golden eyes against its glossy coat of silver fur served only to accentuate its beauty. Its four tails which might have been seen by normal humans as a horrific abomination of nature, or otherwise another aspect of its beauty, swished silently around it as melted into the shadows of the night.

Gleaming dully in darkness, the fox's golden eyes darted to and fro, exploring its surroundings as it wracked its mind, desperately searching for a way out of its living nightmare. There was none. The empty corridor stretched out before it into infinity. There would be no escaping that way, but to turn around and go back was unthinkable, it was practically suicide. Although the house seemed cold and empty, the fox knew that that was far from the truth. All around it, it could sense an overwhelming youki emanating from it. Someone was searching for it. It had managed to prevent itself from being discovered, but it wouldn't be long before that someone discovered it, and then what? Death for the youko or a fate far worse? Involuntarily, it shivered. For the first time in its long youko life, it was truly afraid.

Why had it come here anyway? It didn't know. The desolate house had called out to it, something had drawn it here. A supernatural force had beckoned it, had led it here. Had led it here to die. That thought shook the lovely fox out of its reverie. It had to keep moving. It had to find its way out of this house of horror. It bolted away.

The youko's smaller fox form had its disadvantages, but right now, the youko needed the speed, stealth and agility of this form. Unfortunately, in this form, the youko could not successfully defend itself, it needed its other form to do so.

It skidded to a halt suddenly. Something was wrong, very wrong. It tensed, waiting for an attack. The silver fox began to transform. Youko Kurama had to be prepared to fight for his life now.
