Traditional Machining Processes

Traditional manufacturing processes can be divided into 4 main categories:

Casting and Moulding Processes - The shape of workpiece is obtained by solidification of the material
Machining Processes
Forming (Bulk Deformation) Processes - The shape of the workpiece is obtained by the plastic deformation of the material. Amount of material lost in scrape is relatively small, and can be recycled.
Joining Processes

Here are the characteristics of Traditional Machining Processes:

Mode:	Direct contact between cutting tool and workpiece, using mechanical energy
Material Removal Rate:	High
Power Consumption:	High
Chips:	Produce chips and a lay pattern on the surface
Surface Finish:	Good to very good
Accuracy:	Good to very good
