Remember those old DOS games which had a hot key to display screen-shot of a spreadsheet? You could play those games all you wanted, and when your supervisor came, you can press the boss key till he had moved away! After chatting was "officially prohibited" in my college (Indian Statistical Institute), I used to hope there is chat program offering a similar feature. Then it came to me, and I thought using the idea similar to desktop switchers I can make a program which would hide chat programs (or whatever game I am playing) on the press of a hotkey. The result is Secretly - a boss key program for Windows!.
This program does not have any interface. However, it uses many systemwide hotkeys. Here is the complete list.
Ctrl+Alt+F11 | Unlock hotkeys. This is the only hotkey available when the hotkeys are locked, and you must press this combination to unlock other hotkeys before using them. |
Ctrl+Alt+F12 | Lock hotkeys. |
Ctrl+Alt+Numpad-number | Switch to the corresponding window-set. Number can be any of 1-9. Requires NumLock to be on to function. Default window-set is 1. |
Ctrl+Alt+A | Bring all windows to window-set 1. |
Ctrl+Alt+T | Set current window-set as target. Default target is window-set 1. |
Ctrl+Alt+M | Move current window to the target window-set (which can be set by Ctrl+Alt+T). |
There is no way to end this program directly. If you want to end it, ask windows to force it to stop after pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del. Also it is a good idea to press Ctrl+Alt+A to bring all windows to window-set 1, and then switching to that window-set before ending the program. Otherwise all windows on other window-sets may be lost for the current session.
When this program is run, it adds a registry entry asking Windows to load it automatically at startup. Run the Uninstall.bat to remove this entry. Then you can manually remove the files.
Q. How does your program perform as a desktop switcher only?
A. It does everything a desktop switcher does, but it doesn't have any interface. Instead it relies heavily on hotkeys. You may choose to use this instead of another desktop switcher if you don't like to clutter your desktop, and you know that you will not need an interface.
Q. Why are you giving away the secrets?
A. ISI decided to prohibit chatting and playing games when I was in B-Stat 1st yr. From then this program has served it a lot. Now I am near the end of the five year course (I am nearing the end of M-Stat 1st yr). I thought it's high time I give this program to others to enjoy. If nothing else, it is a fine desktop switcher which I feel others in need should be able to use. Also now ISI has switched to Linux - and so I have resorted different means of achieving the same goal .
Q. Do I have your permission to do really malicious things using this program?
A. Of course not! This program was written light heartedly, and believe me or not what has driven me the most to write the program was to see whether I can write it. This is one of those programs whose usage can be dealt with severe penalties in certain organizations. I will not be responsible for any harm you cause to anybody using this. I hereby strongly forbid you to use this program if you are unsure about using it, and if you still do, use it at your own risk!
