Eriol is a mature, kind person. However, he can't help but dislike his past. As Clow Reed, he had always been alone. It hurted him that he can't be near others, yet his magic was too powerful for anyone to be close to him. Eriol did not want this kind of life. He was also tortured with knowledges of the future, some knowledge that he would rather not know about.
In his desparation for companionship, he created Spinel Sun and Ruby Moon. But that just wasn't enough. Even though in his last moment Clow attempted to get rid of some of his magic, it didn't work out and no one was powerful enough to take his magic away from him. Then he discovered Sakura.
Ever since Sakura was born, Eriol patiently had waited for her. As she grew, Eriol stopped growing. He knew that what he had to do to this kind girl would hurt her, and might even kill her if anything goes wrong. He couldn't let that happen. He decided to stay in a child-like form and wait for the child to grow as old as his disguised form was. That way, he can stay close to her and protect her. Sakura was precious to him as his own child, so he gave up everything he can gain by being a grown-up, and waited until he can come over to Japan.
Then he met Mizuki. Of course, Mizuki saw him for what he was right away. She understood his loneliness and she was willing to help him gain what he wants. He gave her the Moon Bell. After the final judgement, Mizuki returned to England and stayed there to be with Eriol. She accepted him for who he was, and loved him as he was. Eriol knew that he didn't have to to all alone anymore. He just patiently waited for Sakura until he can gain what he desires the most....

Wing's thoughts: "Eriol" is no where to be found. But there's an owl named "Errol" in Harry Potter... *ducks rotten eggs and tomatoes* ^_^ Holly that grows in swamp. Even if he's in a tough situation, Eriol thrives... and holly is a very respected tree, isn't it? And it yields a beautiful red berry...

I prefer the last one. You know how strong his magic is, he manages a household, he's good at cooking, etc, etc, so he's sort of a "golden boy". (Wing: Ano hito wa otoko no ko janai da yo! ^_^)

About Eriol + Sakura:
He's so sweet, so is she. My teeth will rot ^_^ But Eriol isn't romantically intrested in her, the one time that implyed otherwise, he was just teasing her (and at least he was being a gentleman about it). And Sakura doesn't fall in love lightly. When she does, she DOES, and her eyes were too busy elsewhere to look at Eriol in that light.

But they're wonderful friends. Eriol wants her to be happy, and he gave up a lot to make sure she'd be all right. Sakura showed no hard feelings when he revealed why he was in Japan.

They'll always be in touch. (Wing: Oh yeah? Just wait until Eriol and Mizuki decides that it's time for them to have children! Then they'll be too busy to...) *goes flying away as furious fans smack him all the way to who knows where*
