Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour on the house of David, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they will look upon Me whom they have pierced, and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him, as one grieves for his firstborn. There was a reason the first born was special. Supplications (prayer)
The twelfth letter to correspond to this chapter is Lamed - teaching and learning. Lamed towers above other letters and symbolizes the King of Kings, the Supreme Ruler.
The L-rd speaking in this verse.
They (the house of David) will look upon Me (G-d) whom they (the house of David) have pierced.
They (the house of David) will mourn for Him (why doesn’t G-d say Me? Why does G-d say him?)
And grieve for Him (again G-d says Him not Me? This is curious!)
What we have here is evidence, from G-d Himself, for the tri-unity of G-d. The Father is speaking hear, talking about His Son. It shows that they are separate but equal.
When did they pierce G-d?
It was the Father’s will but the nation assumes the responsibility.
Matthew 27:25 Then answered all the people (the inhabitants of Jerusalem), and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
“as one mourns for his only son” - “as one grieves for his firstborn” - This is a reference to Yeshua, G-d’s only son. Hard to understand what this concept really means. It is not the same as you and I having a son.
John 3:16 For G-d (the Father) so loved the world, that He (the Father) gave His (the Father) one and only Son (Yeshua), that whosoever believes in Him (Yeshua) should not perish, but have everlasting life (Eternity with G-d).
Modern rabbis claim that the person spoken of here is not the Messiah, rather a king or priest of either the past or future. However, this passage is applied to the suffering servant, Messiah Ben Joseph in the Babylonian Talmud, Sukkah 52a.
“What is the cause of mourning [of Zech. 12:10]. It is well according to him, who explains that the cause is the slaying of Messiah, the son of Joseph, since that well agrees with the Scriptural verse, ‘And they will look upon me because they have thrust him through, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for his only son.’”
Here we see that the ancient rabbis not only believed that the Messiah would be “pierced” but also that He would die.
Zechariah 12:11 In that day will there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadad Rimmon in the valley of Megiddo.
Why are they mourning? The nation FINALLY realizes that, they as a nation, missed the boat. Their Messiah came 2,000 years + earlier and they rejected Him. That is why they are mourning.
Zechariah 12:12 And the land will mourn, every family by itself; the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves;
Yeshua was from the house of David. His mother was from the house of Nathan, David’s son (See Miriam’s family tree in Luke 3:23 - 38) His own people are especially mournful because they didn’t even recognize one of their own sons as the Messiah.
Zechariah 12:13 The family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of Shimei by itself, and their wives by themselves;
The Priestly tribe with all their knowledge of the Tanakh should have recognized Him but they missed Him too. Here we see them lamenting.
Zechariah 12:14 All the families that remain, every family by itself, and their wives by themselves
