After the visions of G-d’s judgment on the nations, we see the symbolic coronation of Mashiach.
Zechariah 6:9 And the word of the L-RD came to me, saying,
This is not a vision. Zechariah is given the following instructions from G-d.
Zechariah 6:10 "Take an offering from the exiles, from Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah; and you go the same day and enter the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah, where they have arrived from Babylon.
Zechariah is told to meet three returning exiles from Babylon. Heldai meaning “robust”, Tobijah meaning “G-d’s goodness”, Jedaiah meaning “G-d knows”. Together their names have a message. “G-d knows that through His goodness, He intends to put His king upon the throne, and He will do it in a robust and powerful manner”.
Zechariah 6:11 Then take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest;
Zechariah was to use the gold and silver to make crowns. This was NOT a crown of the high priest but elaborate coronation crowns. He was to place them on the head of Joshua.
The crowning of Joshua was a symbolic act looking forward to the day when the Mashiach will be crowned. Joshua can be spelled Y’hoshua, also Yeshua. It is interesting that G-d choose someone with the same name as Yeshua HaMashiach to represent Him in this symbolic coronation ceremony. Hardly a coincidence! Joshua actions help us to further understand the future role of Yeshua HaMashiach. With Joshua the people entered, conquered, and occupied the land.
Crowning the high priest was very unusual because G-d kept the offices of priest and king separate. Yeshua is our high priest today.
Hebrews 6:19-20 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, where Yeshua (Jesus) has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
When the believers in Yeshua receive their “crowns” rewards at the bema judgment. We will lay them at the feet of Yeshua.
Revelation 4:10-11 The four and twenty elders fall down before Him that sat on the throne, and worship Him that lives for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O L-rd, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
When Yeshua returns He will be wearing these crowns.
Revelation 19:11-16 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon Him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns; and He had a name written, that no man knew, but He Himself. And He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood: and His name is called The Word of G-d. And the armies, which were in heaven, followed Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of His mouth comes a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and He treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty G-d. And He has on His vesture and on His thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND L-RD OF L-RDS.
The crowns placed on Joshua are symbolic of these crowns.
Zechariah 6:12 And speak to him, saying, Thus says the L-RD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the L-RD:
He will be from Israel (from His place)
Zechariah is to place the crowns on Joshua and then he states “Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH”. Now Joshua IS NOT THE BRANCH. This is speaking of another Joshua (Yeshua) who IS THE BRANCH.
Isaiah 53:2 “For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: …”
By the time Yeshua was born the royal line of David had sunk back into poverty. Yeshua was indeed a “root out of dry ground”.
Jeremiah 23:5-6 Behold, the days come, says the L-RD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In His days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is His name whereby He shall be called, THE L-RD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Here we see the Mashiach referred to as “The Branch” and we are told He will be “THE L-RD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS”. So G-d revealed to Jeremiah that the Mashiach would be G-d Himself.
Zechariah 6:13 Yes, it is He who will build the temple of the L-RD, and He who will bear the honor and sit and rule on His throne. Thus, He will be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two offices."'
The Mashiach will build the temple. Before the Mashiach builds His Millennial Temple, there will be another temple. That’s right! There will be a temple built and in operation during the 7 year tribulation (70th week of Daniel chapter 9). That is the temple in which the “Abomination of Desolation” takes place. The anti-messiah’s image will be set up in the temple and he will demand worship.
Perhaps the tribulation temple will be destroyed at the coming of Mashiach. (More on this in chapter 14). After the “Abomination of Desolation”, prophesied by Daniel in chapter 9, the temple would not be suitable for the Messianic era.
We learn here that he will be both king and priest, like Melchizedek.
Who other than G-d himself could sit on a throne in the temple?
The Millennial Temple is described in Isaiah 2:2-4 and Ezekiel chapters 40-43
Zechariah 6:14 And the crowns shall be to Helem, and to Tobijah, and to Jedaiah, and to Hen the son of Zephaniah, for a memorial in the temple of the L-RD.
The crowns were not to be worn by Joshua but were to be placed in the Temple after the symbolic coronation ceremony.
Zechariah 6:15 And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the L-RD, and you shall know that the L-RD of hosts hath sent me to you. And this shall come to pass, if you will diligently obey the voice of the L-RD your G-d.
