This canoe tree is located at Moorunde 19km north of Swan Reach.
The area was inhabited by the Ngaiawang nation of Aborigines for many thousands of years prior to white settlement.
From 1839 Edward John Eyre settled in the area and was appointed by the Government as protector of Aborigines. Moorunde was garrisoned by a detachment of the 96th Regiment and Mounted Police.
Canoe scars on River Red Gums have been known to repair at a rate of 6 inches in 100 years. A canoe would have been taken from this very old tree several hundred years ago.
