Historians' verdicts
"The
Protector's religious policy was to move towards Protestantism. The young
Edward VI was Protestant. Moderate concessions to Protestants were essential if
unity was to be preserved. The paradox is that Somerset demolished Catholic
rites while circumventing [side-stepping] doctrinal change. Somerset had created
his own obstacles: his religious policy was chaotic by 1549 because of his
opposing stance on rites and doctrine."
