...MEGAN'S HOSPITAL ROOM. (Megan, Viki)

Viki: Well, I don't know about you, but I'm kind of glad that
everyone's gone. It was getting a bit crowded in here,
wasn't it? Megan? Can you hear me?

Megan: It felt good.

Viki:	I'm sorry ... what felt good?

Megan:	It felt good to say goodbye.

Viki:	Come on now, I know how much you enjoy pretending and
performing and there's certainly nothing like it, but ...

Megan:	I'm not. I'm not. You are.

Viki:	You know honey, just because you feel a little low right now
	it doesn't mean that there's any ...

Megan:	Mom. Mom.

Viki:	What? What is it?

Megan:	Tell me.

Viki:	Tell you. You want more stories? Okay. What do you want
to hear? More about Clint and me ... or Roger?

Megan:	Jake. Tell me about Jake.

...HOSPITAL LOBBY. (Jake, Andrew, Clint and Larry)

Jake:	Come on, Andrew, every second counts. Let's go.

Andrew:	You don't need me tagging along. You're the one she wants
	to see.

Jake:	Andrew, you're her friend, now come on. If it wasn't for
you, I would never be here.

Andrew:	Jake - hurry ... and give her a big hug for me. Go on.
	Hurry.

Larry:	I'll take you down there Jake, come on.

...MEGAN'S HOSPITAL ROOM (Megan, Viki)

Viki:	Do you remember when Jake got your house? I remember - it
was awful. (Laughs) He was so proud of it and it was his
first home. And the rest of us tried to be enthusiastic,
but ... oh, what a nightmare it was! But you know what?
We turned out to be wrong and he was right. He was the one
with a vision. He saw what that horror of a house could be.

Megan:	He knew it could be our house. Our dream house.

Viki:	Yes. Your dream house. And that's exactly what he did,
with his own two hands, he turned that awful house into your
	dream house.

[Jake enters; Viki looks up and breaks down into tears; Megan's eyes are
closed & she is slipping away.]

Megan:	Tell me how he did it, Viki. Tell me how Jake made our
	dream come true.

[Viki and Jake embrace. Viki leaves the room so Megan and Jake can be
alone.]

Jake:	He did it with a hammer and some nails and he missed and
hit his thumb every other time, because he's such a clutz.

Megan:	(Crying) Oh Jake! I wish that were you, Jake!

Jake:	Hey. I heard that you've been hearing some good stories
lately. I've got one to tell you. On the day we were
married - that was the most beautiful day in the history
	of the world.

[Megan's eyes open and she sees Jake. He leans over and kisses her, as
Megan moans in joy and disbelief. Fade out.]

...MEGAN'S HOSPITAL ROOM. (Megan, Jake)

Jake:	The day we got married was the most beautiful day in the
	whole history of the world.

Megan:	Jake! (Smiles)

Jake:	The sun was brighter than normal on our wedding day. The
wind was blowing, the sky was blue. Nobody noticed how
beautiful it was because all they could see was you.

Megan:	And all that I could see was you. Or are you really there?

Jake:	I'm really here. I'm really here. And I'm never leaving
	you again.

Megan:	I'm so afraid that if I blink my eyes, that you'll be gone.
I've dreamt about this moment so many times ... that I'd
open my eyes and you'd be there ... and I'd touch your face.

Jake:	(Kisses her hand) Would I kiss your hand in the dream,
	honey?

Megan:	(Smiling) Yes.

Jake:	Could you feel my lips?

Megan:	No. No, I couldn't feel you. But I feel you now and I
	know... (Begins to cry)

Jake:	(Wiping tears from her face) Shhhh. Come on, shhhh.

Megan:	Don't you `shhhh' me.

Jake:	I just don't want to get you upset, honey.

Megan:	(Smiling) I'm not! I'm the happiest I've been since I
	got sick. I just ...

Jake:	What?

Megan:	...I wish I didn't look so bad...

Jake:	You look fine, you look fine. I'm just kicking myself for
	ever having left you.

Megan:	Well, you're here now. Unless I'm having the best dream
in the whole world and if I am then please, don't wake me.

Jake:	It's not a dream.

Megan:	Did they hurt you in prison?

Jake:	Let's just say that I was there, they were bored, I got in a
little bit of trouble ... But mostly I just stayed hunkered
down in my cell doing push-ups and sit-ups and thinking
about you and all the hours and days and time ... we were
losing out on time that I just want to spend with you.

Megan:	I know. I thought about that - how I was being robbed of
something we could never get back. Could you see the sky
	at night?

Jake:	I could see a little bit from my window, yeah.

Megan:	So many nights I would look up at the stars and think you
were seeing the same ones and I thought - at least we're
	sharing this.

Jake:	I've never let any person into my heart except you. All my
life ... it's just been you. (Kisses her forehead) Honey,
you're burning up, sweetheart. I'm going to tell the doctor
	or nurse, or ...

Megan:	No...

Jake:	Yes...

Megan:	No - please don't. I know I'm hot. I know I get chills.
But I - I am so tired of being poked and prodded and cut and
stitched ... oh, I just want to be touched. Please. Don't
	go anywhere.

Jake:	I won't.

Megan:	We've lost so much time. I just ...

Jake:	I know.

Megan:	Stay here with me. I just want to be alone with you.

[Jake drops his head in sorrow]

Megan:	Jake - look at me, honey. Look at me. Please don't be
afraid. I get lost sometimes these days ... I need you to
	guide me.

Jake:	I'm the one that's always getting lost. Until I found you.
Wherever you are, your smile is like a light in the window
	for me.

Megan:	(Shaking her head) Maybe it used to be ... when I was
healthy. I don't even remember what that feels like. I
wonder what you see when you look at me now.

Jake:	I see my bride.

Megan:	Was that really the most beautiful day in the whole history
	of the world?

Jake:	Without a doubt, baby.

Megan:	Oh ... I wish I could hold that day in my hand right now.
	Do you remember our tree?

Jake:	Yeah. Of course I remember.

....FLASHBACK TO MAY 1991: LAWN OF ST. JAMES CHURCH. (Megan, Jake and
the rest of their friends and family)

Megan:	OK, everybody. Come close, come close.

Asa:	[to Renee] They're going to plant a tree!

Renee:	Hush, darling. You might learn something.

Asa:	I know how to plant a tree!

Megan:	Asa, don't worry ... we've been given permission to plant
this tree. It's a symbol of our love and a way of giving
back to God a little of the joy he's given us. We hope that
in the years to come, all of our friends and our family will
think of us as they pass by this tree.

...BACK TO MEGAN'S HOSPITAL ROOM. (Megan, Jake)

Megan:	Whose idea was that carriage anyway?

Jake:	My idea. I just knew you would be as pretty as a princess
in a fairy tale. Maybe with a pumpkin, and a couple mice
	...

Megan:	(Spirits falling) Well, that was some gift, because I'm the
	one turning into a pumpkin.

Jake:	No you're not. Shhhh...

Megan:	I thought we were supposed to live happily ever after.

Jake:	We will. God didn't bring us back together only to separate
	us again.

Megan:	You know what I remember about you?

Jake:	What?

Megan:	Underneath that tough-guy exterior, beats the heart of a
	shameless romantic.

Jake:	Only for you.

Megan:	(Smiling) Well I hope, only for me.

Jake:	No, I mean ... only because of you. Because you came into
	my life.

... BREAK ...
... MEGAN'S HOSPITAL ROOM. (Megan, Jake)

[Jake is standing at the window, looking out into the fading sunlight]

Megan:	What kind of day is it?

Jake:	It's cold ... clear ... it's a nice day, honey.

Megan:	It seems so right to have you here. It's like you never
	left.

Jake:	I wish I hadn't - if only I hadn't.

Megan:	No Jake, don't. What did you miss? Me getting sick.

Jake:	What did I miss? I missed you! I missed everything - I
missed our tree, the tree we planted on our wedding. I used
to sit in my cell and think 'How's that tree doing? Is it
	growing?'

Megan:	I saw it this fall.

Jake:	Yeah?

Megan:	Red leaves, so beautiful. Then it made me miss you so I
couldn't go back. Oh, I wish we could go back now.

Jake:	Do you remember, when we planted the tree it was still
blooming? Do you remember that? I can still smell it.

Megan:	(Spirits falling) I bet it's pretty scrawny now, like you
	know who.

Jake:	I happen to like the way trees look in the winter.

Megan:	Like skeletons.

Jake:	No - it's just ... it's like everything else has been
stripped away and you can just see its heart ... see how
	beautiful it really is.

Megan:	(Crying) I'm not beautiful, Jake.

Jake:	Yes you are. Yes you are.

Megan:	You used to see a princess in a fairy tale. That's not me.
	Don't lie.

Jake:	I'm not lying to you, I wouldn't lie to you.

Megan:	I wanted you to come back so bad. Then I would look in the
mirror and see myself and I'd get so scared and I thought
'What if he does come back? And he sees me?' Oh ... my
	beautiful, beautiful husband!

Jake:	I will take you any way I can get you. And you are going
to get better ... you are going to get better starting right
	now.

Megan:	I don't know...

Jake:	I do know. I do know, and like our tree that we planted -
it may look bare right now, honey ... it may look like it's
on its last legs ... but listen - before you know it, it's
going to be blooming again. And so will you ...

...BREAK...
...MEGAN'S HOSPITAL ROOM. (Megan, Jake)

Megan:	What was your prison like?

Jake:	Oh it was a regular vacation spa ... a club Fez on the
	Mediterranean.

Megan:	With dancing girls?

Jake:	Just Helen.

Megan:	Helen?

Jake:	Helen was a water bug about the size of a dinner plate that
lived beneath my cot. And, listen, she wasn't as young as
she used to be so she used to complain a lot about her pain.
And she'd say, 'Hey Jake - how come you never ask me how I'm
feeling?' And I'd say, 'Helen, how the hell are you?' and
she'd say, 'Don't ask me how I'm doing ...' And you know,
she was just a little taller than Doctor Ruth...

Megan:	(Laughing) Stop! Stop ... you're going to make my heart
	monitor race.

Jake:	I have that effect on a lot of women, I'm told.

Megan:	(Smiling) Thank you.

Jake:	For what?

Megan:	For being you. For making me laugh. For coming home.

Jake:	You shouldn't thank me for that. That honor goes to your
	friend, the minister.

Megan:	Andrew. I didn't even ask about him. How is he?

Jake:	He's OK. He's as happy to be home as I am.

Megan:	How did he get you out?

Jake:	Well he didn't get me out, at first. Actually, we were
roomies ... cellies ... for a little while.

Megan:	Why?

Jake:	Well, he tried all the usual diplomatic channels and failed
and this guy who was holding me ... this General Gazi ... he
wasn't quite "all there" and he challenged Andrew to this
war game. He said if Andrew won, I'd be freed. Andrew
	lost, so ...

Megan:	But you're here.

Jake:	Yeah, well, it's a long story and I'll tell it to you later,
but I have to say this - your friend is as tough as they
	come.

Megan:	Well somehow, that doesn't surprise me. He's been a very
	good friend.

Jake:	He put his life on the line for me.

Megan:	He would have done that for anyone.

Jake:	No, I don't think so, honey. He fought so hard for me,
because he cares so much for you.

...BREAK...
...MEGAN'S HOSPITAL ROOM. (Megan, Jake)

[Jake is at the window again. The sun has nearly set and the room is
 growing dark]

Megan:	Jake? Come back.

Jake:	(Laughing) I was just working on my tan...

Megan:	The sun's still up?

Jake:	Yeah. It's right on the horizon. It just looks so far away
this time of year, you know?

Megan:	You sound so sad...

Jake:	No ... I was just thinking about how lonely I used to be
	before I met you.

Megan:	Ah, you had girlfriends.

Jake:	No. No, I had girls. They weren't my friends. I wouldn't let them
	be.

Megan: Why not?

Jake: I was always afraid that they would leave and so I would just
 	leave them first.

Megan:	Well you had reason to be afraid to trust someone.

Jake:	Yeah ... thanks Mom, for dumping me. You know, that hurt
for a long time and for a long time when it finally went
away, I swore to myself I would never let anybody like that
	hurt me again.

Megan:	I wish I'd known ... known that you were afraid when I met
you. I didn't understand you. I just thought you didn't
	care.

Jake:	If you only knew how much I cared. You know, I said to
myself the first time I saw you ... I said, 'Self ...
there's a woman who can hurt you more than anybody's ever
hurt you in your whole life.' But you didn't.

Megan:	How could I? I was so ... deeply in love with you.

Jake:	I know. I could see it. I mean, I could feel it and I
don't know ... all my fears just went away.

Megan:	Promise me, Jake. Don't even think about this,
	just promise me.

Jake:	I'd promise you anything.

Megan:	That you'll never shut off like that again.

Jake:	Now why would I do something like that?

Megan:	Because ... the one thing you're so afraid of is being
left behind. And I have to leave you...

Jake:	No! Don't you talk like that.

Megan:	Yes. You know I do. So you have to promise me that my
dying won't close your eyes to the rest of the world.
Jake ... the world is beautiful.

Jake:	(Shaking his head, crying) Not the world, honey. Just you.

Megan:	Hold me.

Jake:	What about the monitors?

Megan:	(Crying) I don't care about the monitors. I don't care
about the monitors, I don't care about the IVs, I don't
care about the tubes ... just ... please, just hold me.

Jake:	OK. (Climbing into bed with her) I don't want to hurt you.

Megan:	You won't hurt me. Oh God, I've missed you so much!

Jake:	I've missed you too, honey.

Megan:	Do you know what I missed most?

Jake:	(Smiling through his tears) Let me guess ...

Megan:	(Smiling through her tears) No ... No. I've missed falling
asleep with you holding me. Curled around me like two
	spoons in a drawer.

[Megan turns over on her side, as Jake wraps himself around her]

Jake:	Don't hurt yourself.

[Camera pans back]

...OUTSIDE MEGAN'S ROOM. (Andrew)

[Jake leaves Megan's room]

Andrew: (Looking up) Jake?

Jake:	Hey.

Andrew:	Are you OK?

Jake:	Yeah, I've been better, though. Megan - she's hanging in.

Andrew:	Thank God.

Jake:	No, thank you. Thank you for getting me here in time.

Andrew:	(Gets up to go) Well, you say hello for me, then. I'm
	going ...

Jake:	No - go on in and say hello, because she was asking anyway
and she wants to see you.

Andrew:	This time is for you two. I know how precious every minute
	must be.

Jake:	You're right - but this is your time. So go on - go on in.

Andrew:	I'm just a friend.

Jake:	Just a friend? Come on ... you were here when I wasn't.
You helped her through all the bad stuff. You almost died
for me. If you think that's just a friend, you're wrong.
	It's more than that.

Andrew:	It's meant a lot for me to know Megan.

Jake:	I know what it's like, believe me. She's my best friend.
I just ... I have an idea I want to show her, so if you
could just do me a favor, please.

Andrew:	Yeah. Just ask me. What?

Jake:	One more favor - just go in there.

Andrew:	Right now, you mean?

Jake:	Yeah - I'll be right back. Just go on in there and you keep
an eye on her. She's probably asleep, but just watch over
her and do me a favor - don't let her go anywhere.

Andrew:	I won't.

Jake:	I'll be right back.

Fade out.

***MEGAN'S HOSPITAL ROOM (Megan, Andrew)

[Andrew walks in, Megan is asleep]

Andrew:	[to himself] Megan ... I don't know what to pray for
anymore. I'm so confused, I don't understand. Oh God,
please help me, help me, help me.

Megan:	(Waking up) Andrew?

Andrew:	Hey... I'm sorry I woke you up. I'm sorry...

Megan:	No. I was someplace far away. I heard your voice. I
wanted to talk to you. So I made myself wake up.

Andrew:	Hello.

Megan:	(Smiling weakly) Hello. Thank you for bringing Jake back
	to me.

Andrew:	Megan...

Megan:	What?

Andrew:	I don't think I did that out of the goodness of my heart.

Megan:	Yes you did. It's the goodness of your heart that loves me.
And I have a secret ... I love you too, Andrew.

Andrew:	(Beginning to cry) Please ... I can't bear this.

Megan:	I do.

Andrew:	Please stop.

Megan:	I do, I do, I do. And I need you to help me clear up the
mess I'm going to leave behind.

Andrew:	Mess? What mess?

Megan:	First order of business is my funeral. Since I'm not going
to be around to see things, you've got to make sure that it
goes right. I don't want any ... solemn, dull moods. I
don't want the guests more unhappy than the person in the
	coffin.

Andrew:	Megan...

Megan:	I'm serious. I want all my friends to let it all hang out.
Okay? No churches. No formal black clothes. I just want
everyone to wear funky bright colors. And I want them to
dance ... and I want music so loud that the cops come. And
	I want a special song.

Andrew:	OK. Which one?

Megan:	I'll whisper it.

Andrew:	I don't think anyone's listening to us.

Megan:	You'll never know ...

Andrew:	Okay ... whisper it in my ear.

[Andrew leans in close and Megan whispers into his ear]

Andrew:	(Smiling) It's a deal. Any special version?

Megan:	You choose.

Andrew:	I can't guarantee that anyone's going to want to dance.

Megan:	Well you tell them if they don't, I'll haunt their dreams.

Andrew:	[picks up the toy robin on the floor] Look what I found.
	We never got it fixed.

Megan:	It must have fallen out of my hand when I fell asleep.

Andrew:	Here...

Megan:	No - I'm giving it back, so you'll have something to
	remember...

Andrew:	[places a hand on her lips] To remember you by? Megan, do you
think there's any chance in all of God's infinite eternity
that I am going to forget one moment of one day that we spent
together? (Crying) I've got to go get Jake.

Megan:	No. Please ... I have a few more favors to ask you.

Andrew:	Okay. What?

Megan: I know Viki's strong

Andrew: Oh, she is, she is.

Megan:	But I'm scared that this will...

Andrew:	I'll look after her for you ... I will.

Megan:	Thank you. Now Andrew, this is hard for me to ask.

Andrew:	What? Tell me.

Megan:	(Crying) I need you to promise me. Promise me that you'll
	take care of Jake.

Andrew: (nodding) I will. Listen, I don't have a choice. I am
always going to love Jake, because he meant so much to you.

Megan:	But I won't be here...

Andrew:	I think you will.

Megan:	Do you remember the first day we met?

Andrew:	Yes.

Megan:	And I asked you if you believed that people come back from
	the dead.

Andrew:	And I said, 'something of a person survives'.

Megan:	Well, if you're right - I will be seeing you.

Andrew:	I hope so.

Megan:	And if you're wrong ... you're out of a job.

Andrew:	We will see each other again, Megan.

[Andrew rises to leave]

Megan:	Wait. Come here.

[Andrew leans in close and Megan kisses him on the cheek and then
slowly on the lips. Andrew breaks down into sobs, rises slowly, and
leaves.]

...BREAK...
...MEGAN'S HOSPITAL ROOM. (Megan)

[Jake enters]

Megan:	Jake.

Jake:	Hey, lady.

Megan:	You left...

Jake:	Just for a little while.

Megan:	I woke up and you weren't here...

Jake:	I'm sorry, honey. I'm sorry ... I just wanted to go get you
	something.

Megan:	What?

Jake:	A little surprise.

Megan:	Show me...

[Jake holds up a valentine card, shaped like a heart]

Megan:	(Smiling) It's not Valentine's Day.

Jake:	Well, this couldn't wait. Go on, read it.

[Megan tries to focus her eyes, but can't]

Megan:	You read it to me.

Jake:	I knew you'd say that. I'm familiar with this body of work:
	     'When I thought that I had lost you;
It was more than I could bear.
		I couldn't eat, I couldn't sleep
I was a shell without you there.

I loved you then, I love you now
Please say that you'll be mine
With a simple rose, a simple kiss
		A simple Valentine.

Megan: That's my favorite poem.

Jake:	I know ... but I wrote it, so it's a little sappy, I'm sorry...

Megan:	No ... it's simple, to the point. It says what it means, that's
hard to do. You always wanted to be a writer , Jake. Follow that
dream. Jake ... stay with me...

Jake: I'm staying right here. I'm not going anywhere. I'm not going
	anywhere. I'm right here, baby.

Megan:	When you're here, I'm not afraid.

Jake:	Afraid of what?

Megan:	I'm not afraid to die.

Jake:	(Shaking his head) Don't say that. Nobody's talking about
dying here, baby, because we have too many things to do
together. We've got stuff to do.

Megan:	(Nodding) And you've got to promise me to do them for us.

Jake:	No! Not without you!

Megan:	(Crying) I know it's not fair. I know it's not fair. But
you have to be strong ... you have to be brave. You do.

Jake:	(Crying) I don't know if I can.

Megan:	You have to. You have to be my rock. You have to help me
through what's coming. Oh, Jake. Jake ... help me let go.
	Please...

Jake:	(Wiping the tears from his eyes) You know what? I'm
	forgetting the surprise, honey.

Megan:	Surprise? Not my Valentine?

Jake:	No, not this. I mean - when I say surprise, I mean
	surprise.

Megan:	What are you going to show me? Soon. Soon...

...BREAK...
...MEGAN'S HOSPITAL ROOM. (Megan, Jake)

[The sun has set and the room is dim]

Jake:	Your big surprise is out on the hospital lawn, honey.

Megan:	Can't you bring it in here?

Jake:	No, I don't think they'll let me bring it in the hospital.
Can you make it to the window?

Megan:	I don't think so ... (Moans)

Jake:	[Worried] Are you in pain, Megan?

Megan:	[Tired] No ... I just feel like I'm ... drifting away ...

Jake:	Megan? Megan?

Megan:	Take me to the window, Jake. Take me to the window.

[Jake begins unhooking Megan from the IV tubes and monitor]

Megan:	[Weakly] Get this stuff off me. Take it off. Take it
all off. [Tries to raise her head, but can't.]

Jake:	Don't hurt yourself.

[Jake picks Megan up from the bed and carries her over to the window.]

Jake:	Hold on to me, sweetie.

Megan:	Put me down ... I can stand.

[Megan leans back against Jake, while he holds her close to his body]

Jake:	I've got you, honey. I've got you. Do you see that?

Megan:	(Looking out window) Our wedding tree...

[The tree is covered with red Valentines, the branches are blowing in
 the wind]

Jake:	See all those hearts are going to become blossoms in just a few
months, honey. And we're going to come back here, and we're
going to count those blossoms together. And maybe a south
breeze will come up, and some of the blossoms will fall off.
[Megan's head pitches forward, but Jake holds it up] And
maybe a quiet rain will start. [The Valentine in Megan's
hand falls to the floor] And after it's done raining, the
sun will come out ... like it did on our wedding day.
Like it did on our wedding day. [Jake breaks down in tears,
kisses Megan's cheek] You said you'd never leave me ...
	you'll never leave me.

[The hearts on the tree below are dancing in the wind. Fade out.]
