Duo Maxwell
The pilot of the Gundam Deathscythe, Duo is as jolly and happy-go-lucky as Gundam pilots get. He persists in offering his friendship to the initially hostile Heero, eventually winning his antisocial comrade's trust through sheer persistence. But despite his friendly nature, Duo earns his "God of Death" nickname when he takes on Alliance and OZ soldiers in battle.
Prior to Operation Meteor, Duo was part of the spacegoing salvage organization known as the Sweeper Group, and on Earth he is assisted by the Sweepers' seafaring kinsfolk. When there is a lull in the fighting, Duo happily returns to his salvage-merchant's trade. He is distinguished by his black wardrobe, his yard-long braided ponytail, and his minister's collar.
In Endless Waltz Duo, who seems perfectly happy not to have the fate of humanity resting on his shoulders anymore, has returned to civilian life as a scrap dealer. However, he still keeps in touch with his buddy Heero, and tags along on the grim hero's rescue mission to the space colony X-18999.
Judging from a flashback sequence in Endless Waltz, it appears that Duo came into possession of the Gundam Deathscythe more or less by accident. As a member of the space scavenger organization known as the Sweeper Group, he discovered the genocidal scope of the true Operation Meteor, and attempted to destroy the Deathscythe rather than let it be used for mass murder. Professor G, evidently of the same mind, suggested that Duo instead take the Deathscythe, flee to Earth, and join forces with Howard to attack OZ directly.
