What does ( Niigata ) mean?

Japanese use Chinese characters.

Though modern China is so great, ancient China had been more great and the most developed nation in the world. Do yuo know that they had invented paper and gunpowder first on the earth? Japanese had learned a lot of things from Chinese.

They had also invented Chinese characters. Chinese, Korean and Japanese are using thsese ancient characters even now. Those who are using ancient characters in the world are only us. Ancient Egyptian or Mesopotamian letters had been already abandoned in old days.

Chinese characters are very interesting, as some of them are hieroglyphs. If you have a Chinese friend, learn about them from him. It may be great fun for you. Then I will teach about the name of my city.

What does ( Niigata ) mean?

are Chinese characters and are read as Niigata. is read as Nii. It means new. is read as Gata. It means a lagoon. So means the New Lagoon.

Niigaga City is in the open field which develops on the river mouth of the Shinano. It is surprising that some part of my city is sitting below sea level like Holland is. So there were many swamps and lagoons. Though most of them have been reclaimed, there are some remains here and there. Look at those pictures below. The left one shows the Toyano Lagoon, which is the largest lagoon in Niigata. The right one shows a creek. Though water in it is mad, some fish like large mouth bass, breams and cat fish live there.
