History
Canada's reconnaissance vehicle was a Lynx but ended service it's usefulness
in the beginning of the 1990's. They decided the LAV-25 design was good
so they ordered 152 reconnaissance enhanced LAVs which may go to 229. The
deliveries began in 1996.
Sensor Equipment
The Coyote has a 10 m telescoping pole which some of the sensors are
located. The pole can retract completely into the hull. The sensor equipment
includes a ground surveillance radar, thermal imager, visible spectrum camera
and a laser range finder. The sensor array can be deployed on a tripod which
can be placed 200 m away. The sensor array is linked to the deployment vehicle
by a fiber optic cable. The sensor array can detect a moving man 3.1 km
away and a moving vehicle 12 km away. It can recognize targets 3.1 km away.
The visible spectrum can detect vehicles 12km away. The laser range finder
is good to 9.9 km.
Performance
The Coyote is equiped with a 25 mm chain gun with coaxial C6 7.62 mm
machine gun on a two man electric drive turret. On the turret there is a
laser warning reciver to detect if the Coyote is being painted by a laser.
It has advanced fire control systems and stabalization which allows for
firing on the move. It's armour is resitant to small arms fire, mines and
air burst as close as 10 m. The tires have run flat inserts which allow
the Coyote to continue moving on flat tires. Despite the LAV design, the
Coyote in not fully amphibious but can go in water 1.2 m deep.
