Certifiable color additives
Certifiable
color additives
are man-made, with each group being tested by the manufacturer and FDA. This
"approval" process, known as color additive certification, assures
the safety, quality, consistency and strength of the color additive before it
is used in foods.
There are 9 certified colors approved for use in food in the United States. One example is FD&C Yellow No.6, which is used in cereals, bakery goods, snack foods and other foods.
