On August24,A.D.79Mount Vesuvius erupted. Hot poisonous gases gushed up, the solid rock blocked the vent high into the air. Pompeii was soon buried under more than 20 feet of rock and ash. Steam rise from the volcano turned into water, mixed with the volcanic ash, made a sticky mixture. This rolled to the nearby city, Herculaneum. So this city was buried by the sticky mixture.
