The violoncello, or "cello" has been around since the 16th century, when it was used primarily as an ensemble instrument. The cello is tuned an octave below the viola, and has a C, D, G, and A string. The performer sits on a chair and rests the cello in between his or her legs. Cellos were not often solo instruments until the late 17th century with pieces by Domenico Gabrielli, J.S. Bach, and others. The cello plays tenor, bass, solo, orchestral, and chamber music parts, being only second to the violin in importance.Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, there were many famous cello makers, such as Antonio Stradivari. Famous composers include J.S.Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Luigi Rodolfo Boccherine. The cello will always be an important part of the orchestra. ¡@ |
