INDUSTRY COMMENTS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
As we know, people and the good customer services we provide are Hong Kong's strongest competitive edge. Firstly, recognising that there are some 300,000 SMEs in various trades, representing 98% of Hong Kong's business operations and employing 60% of the work force in the private sector, customer service should be placed a high priority of enterprises. Secondly, with over 80% of GDP contributed by the services sector, the most effective way to rejuvenate Hong Kong's economy and international reputation quickly is to improve our quality of service. Customer service issues in customer service center, technology and management; retention, motivation, training and development of customer service staff; customer loyalty and retention and many others are becoming increasingly important and more so challenging with higher customer demand. That is why many corporations are interested in joining as members in the consortium effort. Their vision, and ours, is to build Hong Kong as a premier service center. The past 12 months had been tough for many businesses in Hong Kong and we are uncertain if the worst is over. Faced with the continued slowdown of the major markets and the challenge of an economic restructuring brought by the combined impact of globalisation, advances in information technology and rapid economic development in the Mainland, we all have to work harder and smarter. As Hong Kong positions itself as an international financial centre, as a centre for tourism, a centre for logistics and trade and commerce, we need to move up the value chain and offer high-quality, high value?added services. In this process, we have a vital role to play in enhancing the software of our service infrastructure. I firmly believe that customer service is instrumental in achieving business success and creating differentiation, both in boom years and in lean years. I think better customer services help Hong Kong improve its competitiveness as Asia's world city.
