The new building of the Hong Kong Museum of History at Tsim Sha Tsui East
opened in 1998, covers an area of 17,500 square metres. "The Hong
Kong Story" Permanent Exhibition is the soul of the museum. It is
divided into 8 galleries and outlines the history of Hong Kong from 400
million years ago to the return of sovereignty of the territory to China
in 1997, through the display of over 3700 exhibits, graphic panels,
dioramas and multimedia programmes. Beside that, museum also organizes
thematic exhibitions, weekend lectures, demonstrations and special
workshops which cover a wide range of topics in Hong Kong and world
history. The resources centre preserved many reference books, historical
photographs, oral history tapes and other audio-visual materials for
reference. (The museum is closed on Tuesday)
The Hong Kong Science Museum opened in 1991. It is four-storeys high
building next to the museum of history and covers an area of 12,000 square
metres. You can find about 500 collections divided into different zones,
and parts of them are hands-on exhibits. The zones are related to Physics,
Geography, Mathematics, Meteorology, Life Science, Computer,
Telecommunications, Transportation, Home Technology & Energy, etc. The
museum also organises some specific exhibitions, like Chinese Aerospace
Exhibition, and science-related courses. (The museum is closed on
Thursday)
