SCHOOL
HISTORY(ENGLISH VERSION)
Clementi Secondary School came into existence in 1926 under
the name of Clementi Government Vernacular Middle School. The school was founded
on three principles, viz, (i) to give significant attention to the Chinese language
while recognising the pragmatic value of English, so as to facilitate the development
of young people with good character for society; (ii) to promote the professional
development of Chinese language teachers, in order to provide Chinese medium
schools with quality Chinese teachers; (iii) to prepare students for continuous
education at university level, and for research in Chinese language, literature,
history and philosophy. Therefore for over seventy years the school persisted
in Chinese medium of instruction, while emphasising the importance of English.
When the school was founded by Mr. Li King Hong, then a Chinese language inspector of schools, was appointed the first Principal of the school.
During the Second World War, the school had to suspend its operation. A year later, classes resumed and the school was renamed Government Vernacular Senior Middle School.
The school was renamed Clementi Middle School in 1951 before it adopted its current name Clementi Secondary School in 1988, to commemorate the contributions made by the late Governor of Hong Kong to Chinese education.
In its inception stage, the school operated on various premises. On 23rd September 1961, it finally moved to its current address at Fortress Hill Road, North Point.
In 1999 the school was nominated by its past student association to enter for the Outstanding School Awards election, sponsored by the Quality Education Fund. As a result, the school was awarded a Certificate of Merit in the domain of Support for Students and School Echos. The prize giving ceremony took place in July 2001. In 2002, the school was invited by the Quality Education Fund and Education Department to participate in the Schools' Professional Collaboration Project by sharing successful school practices with other educational bodies.
The Adjudication Panel was particularly impressed with the team spirit of teachers who share a common school mission and educational beliefs and work together in implementing programmes to provide pastoral care for all students. Both teachers and students have a very strong sense of belonging to the school. With the strong support from the active Parent-Teacher Association and the school management for home-school activities, and proactive parental involvement, a productive home-school partnership has been forged for students' all round development. The support given by the alumni is very strong as well. Extra-curricular activities, cross-curricular programmes, and annual mass programmes provide ample opportunities for students to develop their social skills, leadership, and civic awareness. Students also benefit from programmes in family education and environmental education. A warm, supportive and caring relationship exists among teachers and students.
Clementi Secondary School
is the oldest secondary school in Hong Kong, using Chinese as the medium of
instruction. It emphasises the importance of proficiency in both English and
Chinese, and plays a significant role in the promotion of moral education through
students' participation in extra-curricular activities. The school consequently
has developed an ethos which upholds respect for teachers and positive values.
Students and teachers of our school will carry on the mission of propagating
its admirable tradition.
