Full-time BEng (Honours) in Building Services Engineering SFBE2
Design Project I (2005/2006- Semester 1)
Subject code: BSE4781-181
Subject Examiner: Prof. Daniel Chan
Deliverables
The submitted material should be clear and concise. No lengthy description is expected. Students should be aware on the approach how the design is rationalized, instead of just giving final design solutions.
Simulation software:
Each student is required to demonstrate his/her understanding of design simulation software by submitting a case study report for ONE advanced software, including the following:
Ø Description of the software's computational algorithms, structure and key functions
Ø Input set-up for the case study, attaching a floppy disk/CD as appendix
Ø Data analysis using tables and figures
Ø Interpretation of simulation output, main findings and conclusions
Ø Criteria on the application and limitations of the software
Stage 1: Business plan and sketch plan for building development
Ø A4 size promotion pamphlet and oral presentation
Ø Executive summary report of the business plan of the development and site investigation
Ø Drawings: revised architectural layout with proposed plant rooms and services duct requirements, schematic diagrams for the major services, access routes, means of escape, .etc
Ø Individual design file***
Stage 2: Outline design
Ø An executive summary report outlines the design objectives with rationales and a plan on achieving the objectives, design theme or special features. The report may include, but not limit to, the following items
● building characteristics, key information, utility/site/client constraints
● building services provisions and system distribution, with the explanations and justifications on the design alternatives
● a summary of the design criteria for services systems and the regulating authorities
● a summary of load estimations
● a budget plan for the building services systems and provisions,
Ø A4 size promotion pamphlet and oral presentation
Ø Drawings: schematic diagrams for the major building services systems,.., etc
Ø CD ROM of key information
Ø Individual design file***
*** The student is required to keep an individual design file and to present it in an orderly manner to the supervisor and other assessors during progress assessment. The file should contain the client’s brief, site investigation, design criteria, minutes/notes of meetings, further instructions as agreed with the client/supervisor, reference material, hand sketches, computer printout, detail calculations, relevant catalogues, publications, etc. Irrelevant materials should be excluded.
