EGO DEFENSE MECHANISMS

This mechanisms aim to help individual deal with anxiety and prevent the ego from being overwhelmed. Once used, they depend on one¡¦s level of development and degree of anxiety. Below are some of the examples:

 

Repression: an involuntary removal of something from consciousness.

 

Projection: involves self-deception consists of attributing to others one¡¦s own unacceptable desires and impulses.

 

Displacement: the expression of an instinctual impulse is redirected from a more threatening person or object to a less threatening one.

 

Rationalization: people manufacture some good reasons to explain away a bruised ego.

 

Regression: people revert to a form of behavior that they have outgrown.

 

Sublimation: enables the person adaptively to divert impulses so that they may be expressed via socially approved thoughts or actions.

 

Introjection: consists of taking in the values and standards of others.
