From 1923 on Freud suffered from cancer of the throat and jaw. However, he persisted in his work. During his last two decades, he underwent 33 operations to halt the spreading cancer.

Freud died on September 23, 1939, in London, England. He pioneered new techniques for understanding human behavior, and his efforts resulted in the most comprehensive theory of personality and psychotherapy ever developed.
