Established 1990, Kaotai
is the premier flight site inTaitung. The launch decks
were recently resurfaced. A teashop/campground was opened
1999. Despite the tour busses and spectators, the
site is still very well managed and well maintained.
Kudos to the tour operators who keep their cattle very
much in line. This is the site of the annual Huadong Valley
Paragliding Invitational.

Pilots often take off here, fly up
to the Taiping site, and then fly the north
along the west rim of the Huadong
valley to Guansan, Chrsang, Fuli, and
Wuli, halfway to Hualien.

Local farmers are very friendly. And it's
easy to hitch a ride back up to launch. If
you don't like camping out, there is a hotel a short
walk from the LZ.

Taiping
was cleaned up in 1998. The launch deck is
large enough to spread 2 gliders but affords
no room for a running launch. But,
the updraft is usually strong enough that
you don't need it. Spread your glider, get
it up, and let mother nature do the rest. This is
a nice 'fly- down- to- cloud- base' site. ( I didn't
do it! )

Tai-an was
cleared 1999, although local pilots had flown it a couple
of years ago. The north launch affords
a gentle slope before the drop and is popular
in the winter. Ride up the spur when the wind is
stronger to gain altitude, or go out of the draw when
the thermals are hot. House thermal on the
east face results from convergence winds. The south
take off has a sharp undercut about 4 meters below
it.

^^;
Caution and good judgement are
advisable, as always. Out the draw, are some
small villages, army training, barracks and a graveyard.
But the best thermal seems to be over the dairy
and pig farm, which, by the way, lies directly
between the TOZ and the LZ. So, if you
can't find the LZ, just follow your nose.

This site is just a few km outside
the legal range of the local airport. It is within
eye site, but well out of the flight paths.

Jin Dzun San
has a number of potential take offs, and spectacular
views. The east take off faces the sea. The town of
Taimali is just below. A fair thermal
generator, on a bad day it will keep you aloft
until the beach LZ. On a good day, the sky's the
limit. The north face TOZs require you to fly out the
draw, being mindful of leeside turbulence. I'll
get pictures of this site when the golden
needle flowers ( hence, the name ) are in bloom.
