Theatre offers a preview of the outstanding exhibits on display in
each gallery as well as an overview of Hong Kong's cultural
characteristics.
A short introductory film, Our Living Heritage, leads
you through different space-times into the heart of the dynamic city that
is Hong Kong, allowing you to experience our unique and rich cultural
characteristics and to gain a comprehensive insight into the relationships
that interact in the integration of the diverse cultures that can be found
here. In addition, selected item from our collections are displayed in
this theatre to introduce the role of the museum in the preservation of
our cultural heritage.

With most of the exhibits specially designed for
children aged 4 to 10, this gallery offers a fun way for kids to learn
about the wonders of nature, discovery the mysteries of archaeology and
experience some sweet memories of Hong Kong.
The gallery consists of eight learning play zones that
lets the children roam through the Mai Po Marshes, penetrate deep
underground and dive into the ocean to get to know birds, insects and sea
creatures. They can take a look at the work of local archaeology and
discovery for themselves the artifacts excavated in Hong Kong in a series
if games specially conceived for them. Plus, they can explore life in a traditional
New Territories village, make friends with other children and play some
old but exciting and challenging game with their families.
In addition, the exhibition Hong Kong Toy Story
introduces the development of local toys and allow older visitors to recapture
some childhood memories.

The eight main themes of this gallery - Natural
Environment, Prehistoric Life, Trade and Coastal Defense, Glimpse of the
fishermen's Life, Life in a Village, British Rule, Great Transformation
and New Challenges - introduce the history and development of the New
Territories.
With over 300 artifacts from the New Territories on
display, the gallery consists of a series of time tunnels that lead you
through over 6,000 years of New Territories history. These time tunnels
trace the area's geography, climate and ecological environment and give a
taste of ancient food culture. They give an overview of the close
relationship between Hong Kong and the Guangdong region from the Tang to
the Qing dynasty. They examine the customs and religion of the early
fishermen and evoke the importance of village lineage, festivals and
wedding rituals. They bear witness to the policies and
infrastructures developed under British rule, review the changes and
transformations that have taken place as the new towns have been
developments that are schedules for the future.
Reconstructed scenes and vernacular architecture -
squares, fishermen's meeting places, ancestral halls and markets -
supplement a series of multimedia programmers and interactive games
installed inside the gallery, allowing you to experience daily life in the
New Territories from different eras and enhancing your understanding of
traditional cultures and societies in the New Territories. |

The performing art typical of Guangdong and Guangxi, Cantonese
opera can trace its origins back a very long way. The art form has always
been popular in Hong Kong, and many famous Cantonese opera artists have
been born here. Displaying the Cantonese operatic treasures of our museum,
this gallery offers a wonderful insight into the history and
characteristics of Cantonese opera.
The gallery features over 200 exhibits, covering the origins
of Cantonese Opera, its golden periods on stage as well as scenes from
overseas performances.
The exhibits include documentation such as contracts, leaflets
and librettos, as well as costumes, stage appliances, musical instruments
and the best available still. The gallery also backstage display, allowing
you to understand how the performances were produced. You can also play
the multimedia programmers to have a chance to look back at performances
of veteran stars in well-known plays. |
The Chao Shao-an Gallery is dedicated to the valuable
contribution made by professor Chao Shao-an to the art world and his
generous donations to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.
Chao Shao-an (1905-1998), alias Chao Yuan and Chao Shuyi,
was a native of Shayuan Lane, Panyu County in Guangdong Province.
Beginning his studies at the age if 16 under Gao Qifeng (1889-1933), a
leading master if the Lingnan School of Chinese painting, he subsequently
came to be recognized as one of the second-generation masters if the
Lingnan School. In 1948, he took up residence in Hong Kong and
re-established the "Lingnan Art Studio", where he taught Chinese
painting and dedicated himself to the propagation of Chinese culture.
Though his life-long devotion to Chinese painting, he also made a highly
significant contribution to the development of Hong Kong art. In 1994,
Professor Chao generously donated his own valuable works to the Heritage
Museum, which aims to provide influential support for the Hong Kong art
scene.
Chao Shao-an was not only an adherent of the "Modernization
of traditionals of Chinese painting" advocated by the Lingnan School,
but he also incorporated the traditions of Chinese art with real life,
developing an innovation and unique artic style of his own. His works are characterized
bu a refined composition and brushwork that evolre a vivid appeal in both
form and spirit. Placing Professor Chao's artistic achievements in a
comprehensive context, the gallery also features newspaper clippings,
sketches, manuscripts, seals, photos and video documentaries by and about
theartist, What's more, a reconstruction of Professor Chao's studio has
been built in the gallery so that visitors can experience a sense of
immediacy and reality as they learn more about about this highly
influential artist. |

Dr T.T. Tsui, found of The Tsui Art Foundation, is a
world-renowned antiques collector know for his ardent love of Chinese
cultural relics. Much of his work has involved the protection and
preservation of Chinese antiquities - many which have been scattered
around the world - and the depth, scope and quality of his collections are
unique. The initial collections of the T.T. Tsui Gallery of Chinese Art
have for the most part been contributed by The Tsui Art Foundation, which
generously donation these antiquities to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum in
1995 for permanent display. The donation represents significant support
for the promotion of Chinese culture and art education.
The T.T. Tsui of Chinese Art feature over 400 example of
Chinese art dating from as far back as the Neolithic period right up to
the 20th century and consisting o Chinese ceramics, pottery sculptures,
bronze, jade, and lac2quer ware, stone carvings and furniture. In
addition, a special feature highlighting Tibetan religious statues, thinker
paintings and other cultural relic can be found in the thematic galleries,
while an education corner and a reading room are also provided for visitors
as an accompaniment to the exhibitions. The exhibits in this collection
not only provide a valuable opportunity for the public to appreciate the
great achievement of Chinese art but also enhance visitor's understanding
of the history and culture of China as a whole. |
